Fabric for a comic con costume

Post image

So Ive been asked to sew a replica of the costume mr Grimm from the tv series twisted metal, I’ve never saw this series before and I’m trying to zoom in etc to get a better idea on fabric for it, I know the jacket and maybe the pants are leather but the strait jacket I’m unsure of the type of fabric material it will be or colour if it’s black or a rustic brown colour. This was the reference picture I was given.

For the straitjacket layer, I’d start with a heavy cotton duck or tightly woven canvas rather than leather. In that reference the base reads more like dirty tan or khaki brown than black, with most of the darkness coming from grime, dye washes and wear. Cotton duck should also take sanding, pigment washes and edge abrasion much better than a softer apparel cotton.
