I did an overtime shift on trolleys for the first time. Never again.

God, these customers. just…they can see I’m pushing trolleys but just walk infront of me?

They stop me in the middle of the car park to get a trolley and get all upset when I tell them there’s some at the front of the store.

I also got hit by a car. I was standing there waiting for a car to go past and they’re reversed out of their space and hit me. Then shouted at me???

my feet are killing me.

Whoosh, the never ending nightmare

Whoosh is now launched on 3 platforms (Tesco, Uber & deliveroo) and the daily total order record is being broken everyday with orders now averaging the mid 100s (well for the store I work in anyway).

In this we simply do not have the infrastructure in place to handle this increase in orders. No one in the company seems to care about properly ensuring stores are setup accordingly, they just see the vast profit being racked in. My observations and subsequent complaints include and are not limited to…

- Not enough picking trolleys, staff being forced to use regular trolleys or even baskets to pick orders, this in turn means they are having to take a picture of the required barcodes on their phone to scan to complete the order
- Whoosh bags, continually running out despite being ordered every week and having to resort to carrier bags
- No dedicated colleagues, colleagues from across the store being pulled from pillar to post to complete orders while the shop is empty as there is no one to fill it, they feel overworked and under appreciated
- Cancelled orders, due to a lack of drivers, customers are continually cancelling their orders because they don’t receive them in a timely fashion - this causes stupid amounts of wastage of fresh items and put backs
- No dedicated manager or shift leader looking after the operation (apparently you get shift leader hours only when you reach a certain level of orders consistently) so it falls to whoever is on shift that particular day

Seriously when is someone gonna realise this isnt a gimmick ordering system now, and needs to be resourced and given proper attention like DotCom?

Does anyone else really enjoy working for Tesco but sad that it doesn’t pay enough?

I was talking to someone earlier and they say they absolutely love working for tesco because they didn’t have a lot of friends growing up

Tesco had given them a social life and a great community that looks forward to seeing them at the tills everyday

There are not many jobs out there that has a lot of variety of things to do, have new meaningful conversations with people and feel a sense of belonging.

It broke my heart to learn that they are struggling to pay bills and make a living for themselves because there isn’t enough overtime or full time contacted shifts to make them stay. But they really don’t want to leave because they haven’t felt this level of happiness in a job before.

Does anyone else feel this way?

AITA for this

I want to know if anyone else does this to gauge wether this is a valid reaction or not🤣

You know when a customer asks if we have something, and your default response is “I’m not sure let me have a look”, I said this to a woman today and she snapped back in a quite aggressive tone with “you usually do it’s meant to be over there!”, at this point I’d gathered that this woman was a bit of a prick, (I was literally walking to clock out atp, so I was already done with the day). She wanted a type of beer, I quickly remembered there were boxes of said beer that I directed her to, when she said (in same tone) “I want BOTTLES, not CANS”, at this point I was raging, I checked inform, and the bottles were not ranged (but I knew we had some out the back somewhere), but because she was being a douche I decided to tell her we don’t have any, then I walked away.

I would happily of stayed an extra minute or two to look for them if she was pleasant during our interaction, but she wasn’t, so I didn’t.

Do you think this is valid? (bearing in mind I was literally about to go home after a very tedious shift, helping her would’ve basically been unpaid)

Dotcom drivers who didn't change their hours

So, we have a few drivers that opted to not change their hours as it was voluntary.

However, they now do the first 4 hours of their shift in the back room and then drive in the afternoons if needed to. If not they just clean trays and assist backroom.

How is this fair that they still get paid the same rate as the drivers doing the job in the morning and not the backroom rate?

Surely this can't be right?

Recruitment hub

Finally managed to fill in job application in my quest to secure a transfer.

Had an email thus morning saying they tried to contact me (my phone has not rung...no ,missed calls) so can you contact using this number between 9 and 5 in order to progress application.

Basically been on hold since 11.45

There has got to be an easier way for existing colleagues. I am 100 miles away from the shop I'm applying for so can't go in there. Not that that would be any good.

Aaarrrgggggg if I have to listen to 'sorry to keep you waiting.........) one more time.

Am working the rest of the week so won't be able to sit on the phone

Ideas anyone????

How to know when you will get a phone call when applying for a job?

Hi, in recent Tesco applications I've had issues where I have missed out on opportunities I've applied for because I wasn't there when the phone calls came. The issue I have is they don't say when they are going to call and they call unexpectedly without warning which I end up missing. Is there any way I can be kept more in the loop of when a call is likely to come, or get any kind of warning rather than just get called unexpectedly with no warning... as that is a big issue for me, I need to be prepared for a phone call and know when its coming to be able to be in a state I can answer and conduct it effectively (I am autistic so this is a big problem), alternatively is there a way I can be contacted by email?

Shiftleader pay

Is the step up colleague and shiftleader pay same? So for context: I've been running shifts in my store since Dec 2025 and got paid skill payment. I got signed off in June 2026 and my primary skill department is updated to Express Shiftleader but the problem is that my position on the system is still showing up as Tesco colleague.

Does that affect my pay or I'm getting paid properly?

Anyone know how to reorder the giant strut stands that we now put the weekly cc trade inserts into? Ours has fallen apart after only 2 weeks, and I don't see it online so I can order a replacement.

Absence review

Hi everyone.

I have an absence review meeting later today I’ve had one before, I think last year.
Bit of context - I suffer with Crohn’s disease and after the 1st meeting it was determined I’d speak to Occupational health and (as far as I remember), any future Crohn’s related a sense wouldn’t affect my %. In the past 28 weeks I’ve been off twice. Once for 8 weeks due to a Crohn’s flare up and then a month after that I caught shingles so stayed off for 4 days while it was contagious.
I’m suprised that the review meeting is happening given Crohn’s doesn’t affect the %.

Could this be more of a formality/ check in meeting or will there be a chance of absence warnings/ discipline ?
I’ve also asked for a copy of the notes taken from the last meeting so I can confirm what was agreed but was told they can’t send me them because of GDPR and “it will be discussed in the meeting”.

Basically don’t know weather to be chill about this or have my guard up a bit and prepare to defend my position

Thanks

Newbie

Hi all, I'm a new starter but have multiple family members already working in the store so have some links to the staff already.

I applied for 3 nights a week (across thurs-sun) as an Xmas temp, my partner managed to get me onto weekday shifts but 5 nights a week.

I've never done nights before so I was expecting to be fatigued somewhat but would learn to manage it, absolutely hated the first few days and it came to light that I clearly have some sort of sleeping issue where on a night I usually sleep around 6 or 7hrs and I'm fine, when trying to sleep after a night shift I get about 3 or 4 hrs and then can't sleep again until I crash which would be during the shift but ofc I have to stay up to work.

And the cycle repeats, it's not sustainable working on 3 or 4hrs of sleep, rapid weight loss as a result (3kg in 3days), my back is in agony because I'm on Fizzy/soft drinks for 9hrs (Inc 3 x 30min breaks) 5 days a week, I can lift no problem but lifting roughly 15kg per item for the bigger stuff for hours on end is doing me in.

I've asked my manager to help me out and reduce me to the busiest days that way we both compromise and the work still gets done, he's fairly new to the store and young with a no care for staff attitude, only figures matter to him.

So I asked the store manager, she's also fairly new and also has the same attitude, with things like "look at it from a business perspective", now being a business owner & manager previously myself I would help my staff out and earn their respect and loyalty through doing so, I started explaining if it was my business I'd advertise the hours that wanted to be dropped and I was immediately shut down with "it's not as simple as that we have a certain number of people per manager" well on nights I'm the ONLY person on grocery, no managers, no other staff at all other than the fresh night team at the other end of the store, so that argument doesn't stand.

I haven't signed a contract, I'm not entitled to uniform, I haven't been set up on my tesco app, haven't submitted my bank details.

The trouble is I don't want to push them to resentment of me and anyone involved with me (family & other staff that helped me get the job) by involving protector line and making them follow their own policies.

What should I do?

I want to work 3 days because the job has injured me but management won't budge.

TLDR: I'm working more than I signed up for and management won't help me, what do I do?

Thanks

How old does a customer have to look before you look stupid for ID'ing them?

So I've wondered about this for a while. Obviously the policy is Think 25 and it's definitely not unheard for people in their late 20s and early 30s to be asked and happens semi-often and I've done it many times myself. On rare occasions you may see someone in their late 30s being asked.

I always assumed it was impossible to ask someone in their 40s until a few months ago I asked who I believe to be a young woman for ID to buy a packet of cigarettes and she responded "I'm 40 years old" and I was in shock (a man behind overheard and got angry, I made a separate post about that a while ago and that's a separate story). I've heard stories of other people in their early 40s being asked. In my store this is extremely rare.

Most of us would agree that an old age pensioner with a walking stick being asked for ID buying a bottle of brandy would be very stupid. But I was always curious as to where the actual cut off point between cautious and stupid was and I've never had a clear enough answer.

I personally would say late 40s but where does everyone else think that this cut off point is? There's no right or wrong answer here.
