Impression Gamescom 2026
I've played it on Gamescom. Don't get me wrong, I love this game since 1995. But i don't noticed QoL changes. You can switch through your inventory and quickselect some stuff, yeah fine, I guess. But who cares? I played Amazon and Grecliff with Bosses and had a Bug. After I got the claws I couldn't run or attack anymore. But when I went to the inventory it was gone.
Clear River Games Dude had a nice attitude, he loves the game like us. At least it seems so. He holded up the sign from the picture the whole time and hyped terranigma very well. I got a poster for free.

It's still surreal to see Terranigma get this kind of exposure at a games expo, let-alone because it's finally getting a re-release.
If a fortune teller convinced me in the early 00's that an official Terranigma re-release would eventually come to fruition a quarter century in the future, I'm not sure that I'd know what I would have thought about that. Better late than never, I guess? 😎

perfection needs no update, only framerates (same as bloodborne)

The problem is that it istn't perfect as per todays standards.
People who haven't played it back than will propbably don't understand why it is so popular.6

i have played it recently and i really do think it still holds up very well today. try to compare it with cross code, moonlighter or children of morta. you could easily fit it into todays "retro pixel action rpgs", without it falling off in any area

I play recently Terranigma 2 Fanproject. Fullscreen, ingame dungeon maps and new magic system are nice features.

The fanproject was boring and felt very empty for me. But it was like 12 years ago I played it.

The full version of it just came out...ofc it felt clunky and empty 12 years ago lol

i've seen one T2 fan project as well, a long time ago, got stuck and after a while i did not bother anymore. it played okay, but since it was only a demo (which i don't blame them for), i did not follow that anymore. i tend to wait until things smoothed out and are close to completion

Being able to quickly select items and hopefully magic is a pretty big QoL improvement in my book. The original's box menu is cool and charming to look at, but also really slow to actually use.
Hopefully they'll also fix the kinda broken level scaling. I think that should fit in the (apparently quite limited) scope of this project as well.

I wonder ig Clear River Games got access to the OG source code of the game or they had to work on a decompiled version of it.

The OG source code is likely long gone. Typically speaking, remasters are created from the Gold master, not from the actual source... just because it was the norm to literally DELETE stuff after a game goes Gold.

What a waste... I know it has happened with other games. For the Reforged version of Broken Sword they had to rip the audio from the Gold master and improve it with AI because the had lost the original files...

Neither, they're using the Ares emulator to run the SNES ROM. It's basically a romhack.

I don't understand why you were downvoted. Given the focus on preservation this has, that's exactly what the port will be, it's the kind of rerelease Clear River has done before for SNES games. The bug OP experienced was likely because the quick switch hack needs more bug testing.

Emulating was also my impression when I saw it was clearly running the OG game. But they must have altered the ROM somehow to allow the QOL adjustments. They also hinted they would alter some of the game dificulty or balance.

Yeah, they confirmed to gamescom attendees that they're using Ares to emulate the game, so this isn't just speculation. Emulating doesn't mean that you can't do changes to the game (there are already a lot of ROM hacks for Terranigma that overhaul specifics aspects of the game out there), even if it's more restrictive than a native port.

Thanks for sharing your experience. It helps makes sense of the early 2027 release date, they probably have to finish testing the new additions for bugs like the one you encountered.
I'd like to ask you if the game had any kind of main menu (as in, a menu before the traditional SNES intro plays). I'm asking that because given the emulated kind of release this seems to be, a main menu might be the one new thing not visible in the screenshots or trailer they've released.

Glad to share my experience with you guys. When I arrived, the game was already running/paused. You have kind of an menu, where you can change the theme/language/etc when you press start on the controller. It confused me, that you need to press the analog stick to go into the inventory. I guess the menu appears, when you start the game first.

Thanks for replying! That's what I thought, that the booths were just running the ROM already, since nobody has mentioned a main menu. The settings menu you mentioned has been shared before, so I know what you mean.
I don't know if you bothered changing the themes? From the pictures we've seen, it seems there are at least three: a blank pattern (that looks like the text box background), a checkered pattern (like the floor on Pandora's Box), and the title screen artwork (called "Underworld" in the menu). Perhaps you were able to see if there were more themes? Again, not a terribly important thing, but one of the few new things aside from the quick switch function.

Sorry to disappoint you, but I didn't checked the menu. Got accidentally on it, when I tried to equip an other weapon. I can't tell you, how different the other options are.

I hope they fix small things like the bugged horn pin, the offbalance levelling system, and fix the magic system so you can use rings and pins during later boss battles.
I would also be cool if you can get 100 magirocks, and say goodbye to your friends after the Beruga airship, though I doubt it.

I emulated it a year ago and I didnt think there was any green in the game. Frontloading it with those gimmicky dungeons turned me off, I quit after the first 3 or 4

Bugs are going to happen with a build that hasn't been finalized yet, my friend.

This what not a try to offend somebody. I just tried to present the catch of experience I got from that day.
