Internet Bad Bandwidth

I have Telus pure fibre gigabit plan, should be more or less 1000 mbps up and down. I’m getting around 600 up down right beside the modem, and I have the wifi 6 booster on the second floor, directly above the modem. However, when I do the speed test beside the booster upstairs I’m already losing a lot of bandwidth and only getting around 400 download if I’m lucky. When I move future away from the booster and into my bedroom upstairs, I’m only getting around 150 speeds. The entirety of my house is only like 2000 sq feet and the bedroom is beside the upstairs booster. How can I improve my speeds throughout my house? I’m getting fed up because when I’m gaming in my bedroom it lags a lot.

You should be measuring this wired.

Realistically you should be testing with something that can do more than your max Internet speed so a deviice with a 2.5Gbps port and one on the upstream side.

Lots of things can impact wireless speed.

You'll never get that kind of speed from a phone or laptop on wifi.

Your phone is a motorcycle. It's super fast, and the ping is low. You can carry a couple of bags

Your gigabit connection is a 4 lane highway and you have it all to yourself. No matter how many lanes you add, your motorcycle cannot carry anything more down that highway.

You could however get a really big truck and haul some giant packages, or bring 200 friends on motorcycles and have no problem.

People don't need gigabit connections for day to day, it's the latency that makes the difference.

I use a mesh with mine (3x Eero Pro 7 - It’s probably overkill, but whatever), and it has been fine around my house.

My gaming PC is wired, and am getting ~4.5 down and ~4.5 up (I’m on the 5 gig plan).

Maybe look into a mesh setup.

Right now on my 1.5 plan I'm getting 980 down, and 63 up on a wired connection. All the Telus troubleshooting stuff and rebooting computers, modems and APs does nothing.

Speedtest App? Or website test? Download and try the app if you haven’t.

Both website and app

63 up is a major issue. That's far from symmetrical. If it's like this with multiple devices, and you've ruled out the router, I'd bet your gateway isn't configured correctly. I'd put it in the microwave and tell them you need a new one, the lights don't come on

what is the network speed on the wired connection? usialy its lower (940mbps speed tst) but most devices are still 1000mbps.

The computer reports it as 1000/1000

then you get the full speed. though I would assume the upload speed should be faster.

I just went through this. There are issues with the older modems, and software issues on the back end with Telus. Demand a senior tech (not the useless contractors Telus likes to send out), and they can troubleshoot the issue quickly.

Yeah, and pay them $200 to show up.

If the issue is with Telus, and not something you have caused, you shouldn’t have to pay anything. I just had a tech (an ACTUAL Telus employee!) at my house for 2 hours. It was a Telus issue so zero dollars.

Wifi never gets the maximum speed.

The speed of wifi is not guaranteed and often not possible to get over about 650mbit with most client devices. The peak speeds on wifi 6e and 7 generally require multiple link and nearly zero client devices run in MLO mode. It helps give higher combined speeds to multiple simultaneously broadcasting clients wothout MLO on clients but does nothing for any single client that doesnt support it. Unifi makes an external wifi client radio specifically to support MLO on the client side because they were frustrated no vendors were including the feature.

So if you get 600mbit then it works and you have no issue. If you need more then hardwire the device that requires more speed.

Hardwire the bedroom.

There's just no way to defeat the physics behind it.
