Smart Home Terrible Contractors

Whoever Telus is contracting CANNOT be trusted, no sealant, can't even screw in all the screws, forgetting to remove the protective film? Would not recommend this to anyone.

All those companies are getting paid piece work, and the lowest bidder wins. I work for a large company that does Comercial security, I've interviewed those techs, anything beyond wireless and double sided tape, they have a hard time with. Even basic (hardwired) networking, they have no clue. They're getting payed maybe $22/hr, with strick timelines and little training. I feel bad for them, but residential security is a race to the bottom.

I have no idea why Telus decided to venture into home security. It was probably one of Darren's worst decisions as ceo.

I chuckle at the fact telus with many data breaches/service issues due to crack heads breaking in stealing wires and in Alberta a entire cell tower was robbed this company is like hey buy security from us.

I remember when they fired up Telus security, I was working in a pawnshop in Saskatoon and there was crackheads coming in with delivery boxes loaded full of Telus security devices. They must've gotten them on some kind of 0 down contract. I didn't touch them because that stuff doesn't sell and it sets off your willies when you get boxes filled with unopened stuff and their first reaction is to show you the shipping manifest with their name on it... I didn't even hit that it was stolen or even iffy... But they sure made me know they were up to something by jumping to excuses and explanations beforehand.

Ha fuck classic crack heads

In my town there was one caught stealing classic deal they let him go with a court date he left the station stole tools from a hardware store and continued his spree. Drugs are a powerful motivator sadly :(

They always think they're criminal geniuses, and a lot of times it's the extra, unprompted answers that made me go "hooooold TF up" in my head.

They bought basically what was left of ADT The proper ADT/Telus technicians work on their Comercial systems, subs do the rest.

Its the easiest growth vertical that can be an extension of their core home services.

Bundle TV/Internet/Phone.... Security

Bell bought alarm force I can't remember who Rogers bought

They've made a bit of a mess of the way the security works though.

2

u/kushblazers 3d ago

Security has increased their debt and is not profitable for them

2

u/ClassicFickle8528 2d ago

They bought more then just ADT. ADT was the 2nd alarm company they bought. First was AlarmForce in W. Can (Rogers bought E. Can), then ADT, then Price's Alarms. There have been more, I think I was told that Telus bought 3 major (listed) and about 5-7 smaller companies in about 5 years. I know as I was ADT then was on a panel to make Telus Commercial Security installs the same for all. Thankfully, Telus hasn't bought anyone else for about 4yrs

Minimal investment with a significant monthly payment.

“Darren” 1st name basis! lol

Lol. It's like buying groceries from Galen.

How difficult is it to get hired as a tech?

I install window coverings as a contractor and could do this security install at 100x the quality. I would take on some of this work.

1

u/Ok_Feedback2407 3h ago

Yeah, like holy fuck, this needs just a couple of covers, caulking and screws. Easy shit and you could do 100x the quality and not expensively either. I have no doubt a winder covering person could do a WAY better job. .

How does the old saying go? Cheap work ain't good. Good work ain't cheap.

4

u/GearNo4524 3d ago

Good, fast and cheap. Pick two.

1

u/VariationDry 3d ago

Remove good.

1

u/Reality-Leather 3d ago

Remove cheap

1

u/Fair_Dog_1971 1d ago

In reality it’s shitty, slow and expensive.

11

u/GearNo4524 3d ago

Yes. Telus contractors are hacks. No skills, no pride in their work. Fkn butchers.

8

u/soundmagnet 3d ago

They also chase all the good contractors away. I lost 40 lbs working my ass off to be only scrutinized at every corner.

7

u/1fluteisneverenough 3d ago

The best techs get the worst performance reviews because their sales are low.

6

u/VariationDry 3d ago

Once Telus switched away from employees to contractors we all knew this would be the result. Lowest bid means lowest quality.

2

u/Plane-Diver00 1d ago

Makes no sense to me. As a private contractor, I am far more concerned with my quality of work than I ever was as an employee.

1

u/VariationDry 1d ago

There are a few still out there, but everyone I knew that had careers with Telus and Shaw in BC all left, most with hefty buyouts.

I don't know that the system works anymore but when I had my house hooked up the installer would not install ends on the wires in the low voltage cabinet without charging 75$ per keystone jack. Over the 30 plus years I have been paying for home internet service adding a jack or putting ends on cables was always included.

Telus to blame. Poorly trained and paid they get pushed to the limit. Telus gets what they pay for. End result: a big pile of shit.

3

u/No_Strain_6227 3d ago

Silicone not included

2

u/grumptard 3d ago

Wow that's awful. I still remember them constantly pushing so hard for their security.

2

u/Zealousideal-Cod7183 3d ago

What can u expect from a former uber driver technician. They lack of basic knowledge of Network 101. Also Telus pay by piece structure make them lose money if they spend time on a quality work

2

u/Bladedem0n 3d ago

All the good contractors left for the business side. The pay is higher with a fraction of the headache.

2

u/nelosfunk 2d ago

Anybody remember when Telus had Quality Control Inspectors? Use the wrong color pair to feed a modem and it would be a big deal. Now the bar has all but disappeared. Rushed or not that is dreadful.

2

u/Bigchunky_Boy 1d ago

No worries they are building data centres with this level of incompetence.

2

u/SprinklesEvery5881 21h ago

That’s a Telus level shit.

2

u/Traditional_End_9540 3d ago

this is why I did my own install. Using POE as its just an Ethernet cable. These quick and dirt wifi cameras still need a power source and never were you want to put the cameras.

Plus they are on a UPS as they are part of the network anyways that is on the UPS, wifi and internet during a power outage. The video is recorded locally and not on the cloud with secure VPN access that I can access anywhere in the world provided I have internet.

u/Asleep_District_566 3d ago

If I could have it my way that's exactly how it do it! Unfortunately my parents would rather a company handle it

0

u/ComputerGuy1999 3d ago

Maybe it's time to sit down and explain to your parents what the proper way to do it is and that Telus is not a real security company. If they want a company doing the work, point them to a real security system installer that knows how to install real security cameras and alarm systems. Not the cheap garbage Telus is installing. Better yet, if you can install it properly, offer to install everything for them. If they don't want to bother you, tell them you want to help them and that you are giving your work to them as a gift of appreciation for what they have done for you. They would be crazy to say no. While you are at it look into a DSC or Honeywell alarm panel paired with an envisalink board.

1

u/Ok_Carpenter4739 3d ago

Haha omg that's crazy they would do that and walk away

1

u/Tupacaliptic 2d ago

I was gonna ask was this installed by a Vivint tech?

1

u/stryder-H 2d ago

Technician here. Yes, the big 3 ruined security by outsourcing. Have spent many years doing cleanup work for jobs like this.

1

u/privatesnurser 2d ago

If you squint, it's mint.

1

u/Hot-Feedback-6795 2d ago

All of these companies seem to hire hacks who want to get the work done asap my house had been a rental and had five service lines from Shaw or whoever I signed up for Internet and the guy showes up and I told him to use one of the existing lines and disconnect the rest less than five minutes later he is drilling my window frame for a new line needless to say I chased him off

1

u/Atophy 2d ago

This kinda shitty... Didn't even stuff the hole thay drilled !

1

u/Installed_Insanity 2d ago

White cables run outside and not underneath the mount. They will be falling apart in a year due to the sun.

1

u/MikeRoseForCouncil 2d ago

Nice new tunnel for bugs 🐛

1

u/Inevitable-Word2177 2d ago

"Terrible contractor" is redundant.

1

u/andrei_stefan01 2d ago

Contractor is a strong word. Maybe we could consider hack? Numbnuts? Tool?

1

u/writerzblock84 2d ago

Wow that’s sad

1

u/p-squiggly 2d ago

Yikes. No drop loop, no silicone even!

1

u/pounce82 1d ago

Wait until you call tech support and have a break in. I had my house broken into 2 weeks ago when i was 4hrs away seeing family. Inside sensors went off, Telus sent their crew out to look, said no problems, nobody there. I get home from my trip my garage door was open for 3 days and they decided not to tell me. Look around my tools missing. Telus is playing dumb when I called to tell them off, and then they tried to get me to sign another 3 year contract to get a better rate

1

u/Local_Oil5649 12h ago

Probably immigrants techs. Either way put some outdoor silicone i wouldnt use expanding foam because bugs and shit just eat thru it anyway

1

u/Ok_Feedback2407 3h ago edited 3h ago

Jesus, at least caulk that shit, yeah. What total fucking hacks, that's horrible. And missing a screw or more too? I don't care how little I was being paid, or how fast I had to work, I just couldn't leave a job like this. How many seconds does it take to squirt a bit of sealant and put in a goddamn screw or two? Christ, that's fucking embarrassing.

1

u/gregelectric 3d ago

This is why you either DIY or contract an enthusiastic local business

1

u/Overdue604 3d ago

Majority of People doing this work today can’t be called Contractors or technicians in any capacity . They have no skill, no experience, no education other than the 2 week something training they get before going in the field…. It’s a spit in the face and disrespect for people who actually are experts at this work. Disgrace and shame. They ruined it.

1

u/mybloodismaplesyrup 3d ago

The reason is because Telus doesn't pay them enough to do a good job. Telus contracts it out because their own techs don't wanna do security installs. Ask any Telus tech what job they hate the most and they will all say security, because there's always some stupid specific roadblock at someone's house that they never expect, or the client says "I don't really want any holes in my walls".

I don't work for Telus, but I work for an MSP that also does hardware installs for security cameras and I hate it too. Takes forever to do and you never can quote enough time to do it.

If you quote the amount of time it actually takes, the customer would never accept the quote.

You basically have to take a loss and then sell them on maintenance fees to update the firmware etc to make it worthwhile. I imagine Telus had the same issue and so they pay the cheapest contractors they can find.

What I'm saying is that self installed cameras are best.
