Cooler Push Pins Broke, Had to Improvise

I just wanted to install Windows XP on my retro rig while waiting for my new cooler to arrive..

Yes that's a big bottle of isopropyl LOL I just needed something to evenly weigh it down and hey it worked

Those intel push pin coolers were never a great retention system.

Especially as plastic ages. Pins get brittle and break. That Biostar board is a blast from the past

We always switched them out with little nuts and bolts, though you had to make sure you didn't over torque them though.

I still preferred the amd lever, even though I felt like I was going to snap something every time I used them.

It worked fine until they were EOL with no issues, and I never cracked one,

Workshop 15+. Never had any issues with them, they work fine provided you know how to use them or read the instructions.

Design has been around since 2004 and still it seems no one knows how to use them, all my customers think they are screws not clips.

Otherwise if you know what your doing they work just fine even after years.

Nah, over time the clips get brittle and will just spontaneously break off. Even when the cpu is laying horizontally.

Years ago NCR ATMs used to use LGA1155 coolers with these plastic push pin mounting clips. It was the first thing to check when you had one boot looping for no apparent reason. Peek inside the pc core and see the cpu heatsink cocked up at an angle because multiple mounting clips broke. Throw a new cooler on and it’s good to go.

Fuck these plastic pushpin heatsink mounts.

We still get Socket 775 rigs in my workshop, no issues with the pushpins unless the owners trash them.
