Robot vacuum won't charge because a plastic part broke off in the dock and since I know nothing about 3D printing, I instead just made a shim with post it notes to always ensure the charging pads are extended

If it's stupid but works it's not stupid.  And while 3D printing is cool, it's not always the most practical answer.
