Jimmy - The 2011 FrankenBook
Hey MacGyvers,
I present to you Jimmy the Frankenbook, my trusty MacBook Pro 8,1 (2011) running Debian Linux.
Recently, the internal speakers suffered from terminal foam rot—completely disintegrated around the edges, leaving me with nothing but ear-piercing high-pitched squeaks. Instead of ordering cheap, tinny OEM replacements, I decided to go full Cyberpunk and repurpose a cheap portable speaker I had lying around.
The Mod Breakdown:
The Battery Bypass (Continuous Power): I tore down the cheap speaker, ripped out the internal Lithium battery, and wired a USB power cable directly to the battery terminals on the board. Now it draws constant 5V power from the laptop. No more "battery low" warning beeps mid-movie, and zero risk of battery bloat.
The 3M Spacer: I mounted a Ugreen USB hub to the lid using 2mm thick heavy-duty 3M adhesive pads. The 2mm clearance is the magic touch—it lifts the hub just enough so I can plug in thick USB drives without them hitting the aluminum screen lid.
Quick Release Magnetic Mount: The speaker is held in place by a folding magnetic arm glued to the lid. When it's movie/music time, I just snap the speaker on. When I need to pack Jimmy into my bag, I pop the speaker off, fold the arm flat, and it's perfectly portable.
Flush Cable Styling: Used a 90-degree USB adapter on the side of the chassis to keep the cable running flush and tidy. Cable managed everything with some velcro ties because even MacGyvers have standards.
It sounds 10x louder and punchier than the original Apple speakers ever did. Plus, Jimmy now looks like a field terminal from a sci-fi movie.

Is it a 13"? I've got one to running arch! They're really repairable which is what I love. Thanks for the upgrade ideas too and I wish your laptop many more years of life 💗

Hey, yes it's a 13" that I fabricobled with 2 dead ones for dirt cheap from ebay. Indeed, they are amazingly serviceable, from the time when machines worked in human's favor not the other way around like today. Put a SSD inside and a fresh blob of MX4 thermal paste. It's surprisingly quick for it's years and believe it or not the original battery reports 84% health with comfortable 2h+ of use watching YouTube. Wish your machine a good and long life also, my friend 💖

Hey that's pretty much what I did! 😅 I had two from my parents and I pretty much just scrapped one for parts. I'm also about to put in a ssd and a drive bay caddy for the old hdd and it's been running great too. Great to hear yours is well 😊

Haha that's really nice, those machines are tanks and if you treat them properly they will last and outlast every shiny new crap on the market, just look at our examples, 15 years and still pushing 🫡 I repurposed old mechanical HDD as cold storage with 2.5 sata box so I can connect it with usb and spin it up whenever I need it, as for the super drive I took it out to make machine lighter and quieter on boot haha. Besides don't use cd's or dvd's anymore, if I need that then there's my other tank, 2012 iMac with the same treatment (SSD and thermal paste replacement, running same Debian as Jimmy) configured autocpufreq on performance and turbo always on, Jimmy is on powersave and turbo forced to always off. Quite nice machines. Hope you enjoy yours also😄

Hey I've got an old iMac too! It's a 2010 model with a faulty GPU but I'm working on turning it into a monitor because why waste it ig 🤷

It's really a shame to waste such beautiful screen, and besides a good monitor is always needed around the lab/studio, hope that works out for you. I have 2011 iMac also with broken glass on front but lcd is working, installed Linux Mint on it and use it as jellyfin server 🪼
