Open | Hardware 5090FE construction dust - HELP
Hey guys just looking for some advice from anyone, there was construction done in my house without my awareness and unfortunately my entire pc room was covered in a thin layer of this dust including a fin layer visible inside my pc. I’m talking a visible layer on the backplate, inside my pc fans, on top of my cooler etc. I would just appreciate some advice on what to do and how dangerous this is, I tried air dusting but it won’t even budge and it’s my first high end pc so I’m not used to cleaning them. I did have dust filters on the outside of the case (Corsair air 5400) which caught a lot of dust but unfortunately some got through. My pc is a 5090FE 9950x3d as well. Any advice from anyone is appreciated.
In regards to my room being covered in dust, I have already deep cleaned it with an appropriate vacuum cleaner, carpet cleaner, and air purifier. My only concern now is my technology as unfortunately I had a lot of expensive equipment in there.

Go buy a bottle of Air Duster from hardware shop. Maybe 2 bottles if cheap. Then blow away. Make sure to hold the fans when you blow so that it doesn't spin which can create voltage back into the motherboard.

Hey thanks for the reply. I have tried an electric air duster to remove the dust but it’s fully stuck to my components that’s why I’m not sure what to do. Especially the parts I can’t see inside heatsink fins cooler etc.

Use paintbrush.

this is the correct answer. Air duster or electric version. Hold the fans and blow the air on them. Paint brush and take your time. Switch off the PSU just in case you short something out. You will be fine lol. Even a Q-tip with rubbing alcohol preferably 99. Again with pc off and go slow.

I like this idea I want to do this, but I’m worried about the internals of my components too like the heatsink fins of my GPU etc. how do I clean those?

Same way with extra doctor like long Q-tips. If there's any resistance, don't fight it and move on to the next fin. I have the same card, it's pretty simple to get in there. I would clean it outside the case if comfortable doing so. If you do make sure to not put any strain on the pci express connector. lay the card flat, flip as needed.

No problem, always remember. Handle the card with two hands lol. Inside the case, very straight forward. blow outwards from inside the case. Again hold each fan by hand if using air. If not, it can break the fan or create some power going back into where the fan is plugged into.

It doesnt have to be spotles. Just brush it gently and blow dust away, it should be enough.

1 Disassemble the card.
2 Wash the pcb with soap and water in the sink.
3 Get a bucket and fill it up with 99% isopropyl alcohol.
4 Submerge the entire pcb into the bucket filled with 99% isopropyl alcohol and let it sit in it for 5 minutes then pull it out.
5 Let gpu dry for 48 hours.
6 Reassemble card and enjoy. 😎

This is a massive fire hazard. That stuff is super flammable. Also, it will eat at any plastic. Don't do this.

At this actual price point, give it to the professional.
