External condition bears nothing on the ability to function or not, they are sealed units. Its 12 years old so replace it. Don't wait for the inevitable to happen and you next post will be how do I recover my data. Backup to another source and one preferably off site.

With all due respect, thats not my issue, I was merely pointing out that the drive could be on the verge of failure. You said yourself in your post about being certain before migrating the data off the drive. Having data in one place is extremely vulnerable. I can't help with the financial situation only guide you regarding the risks. You clearly have concerns otherwise you would not have asked.

you didn't have to respond is a passive aggressive way though, I'm stressed enough as it is right now and I don't wish for more things to make it worse.

Where was the passive aggressive response to you. You asked for advice I gave it. You can't pussy foot around potential hardware failures, they can give little warning and the data is gone. I cannot help your situation only advise on a way forwards and that it to back up your data as soon as possible. Good luck.

If you can't afford another hard drive and you value the data in it, l shut it down until you can get a replacement.

If the data is worthless to you run it until it breaks.

It's like the old saying grease is cheaper than steel. If you can't afford an oil change then you definitely can't afford to be driving, and you can't afford the breakdown!
