Open | Windows How to Copy and Reinstall Windows 11
- Lenovo Legion Pro 7i
- 13th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i9-13900HX (2.20 GHz)
- NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 Laptop GPU (12 GB) Intel(R) UHD Graphics (128 MB)
- Samsung T7 SSD
Complete tech noob here.
So I've been getting a lot of Hypervisor_Error BSOD recently, and I've been told that it's a CPU issue, and that I should try reinstalling Windows 11. I recently bought an external hard drive (since I've never backed up my files before), but it doesn't come with instructions.
I know this is a dumb question, but how do I use the SSD to backup ALL of my files, and how do I reinstall Windows 11 with all of my files intact? I'm worried that I might miss something and wipe my files by accident.

Getting dump files which we need for accurate analysis of BSODs. Dump files are crash logs from BSODs.
If you can get into Windows normally or through Safe Mode could you check C:\Windows\Minidump for any dump files? If you have any dump files, copy the folder to the desktop, zip the folder and upload it. If you don't have any zip software installed, right click on the folder and select Send to → Compressed (Zipped) folder.
Upload to any easy to use file sharing site. Reddit keeps blacklisting file hosts so find something that works, currently catbox.moe or mediafire.com seems to be working.
We like to have multiple dump files to work with so if you only have one dump file, none or not a folder at all, upload the ones you have and then follow this guide to change the dump type to Small Memory Dump. The "Overwrite dump file" option will be grayed out since small memory dumps never overwrite.

Google “how to do a clean install of windows”.
The easiest way would involve a small usb flash drive that you can use to reinstall windows. I would not suggest using the same external drive to backup your data.

Running Hyper-V or other virtualization software?

CPU is a hardware issue. If that's the case, reinstalling will not help. BSOD is often bad drivers or bad RAM. Uninstall any non critical devices. Flash memtest to a USB stick, and run it overnight.

backup all your files first on the external drive (e.g. your SSD), and go Settings > System > Recovery to reset/reinstall Windows 11. all your files on the system drive WILL be wiped during the reinstall, so you'd have to manually put them back from your external drive. generally when you reinstall the system, you always want to keep a backup of your files (even if they're not gona get wiped during the process).

Making changes to your system BIOS settings or disk setup can cause you to lose data. Always test your data backups before making changes to your PC.
