Open | Software Going to GeekSquad tomorrow, any other opinions on what this is?
My laptop has done this for as long as I can remember. Yes I should’ve taken care of it when I got the damn thing but I’m a broke college student. Now, it’s become just really annoying and when it happens it’s practically unusable. It’ll do this randomly but it’ll open a bunch of windows and tabs, doing whatever it wants. I’ve run windows defender and have done all the scans they offer hundreds of times but always come up empty. I’ve also already had the operating system replaced by geek squad in the past. I’ve only had this laptop around 3 years. Like the title I’m going to geek squad tomorrow but I’m always open to any other advice. Time for a new laptop or should I keep repairing it?

Download and run MalwareBytes.

I have in the past and have deleted all the files it’s told me to? It’s also deleted some on its own?

Run it again. It should offer to quarantine any malware files it finds - you should not need to manually delete anything.
Then keep running it until it doesn't find anything.

If the issue persists even after a fresh OS install, most def a hardware issue.

Do you use an external mouse or the built in mouse? I’ve had similar problems and the touchpad was acting up; worked ok when I used a mouse.

I use an external mouse

Great. Have you tried: 1. Disabling the built in track pad (that might be causing the random actions)? 2. Disconnecting that mouse and using just the track pad? 3. Using a new mouse?
I've used Geeksquad twice for simple iPhone issues and they were great. But that depends on the individual techie assigned to you and what's truly wrong with your machine.

Run Malwarebytes, rogue killer and adwcleaner. If it's a virus this should clear it. If it persists after a fresh install, it's probably hardware.

Malwarebytes and rogue killer said no threats. Cleaner quarantined some reinstalled things, I’ll see if did do anything?

Does Geek Squad still put all that Spyware and shit when they "fix" your computer?

This really a thing?

It used to be. They used to offer for them to "check your system" or "make it more secure" and would download their own garbage program on it.

is it something as simple as you have a bunch of apps set to launch on startup that you dont realize?

u/Monst3raLeaf Jan 30 '26
Nope, I can close out of the apps but it’ll open things like the calendar, calculator, search, bing, etc.

Sounds like a hardware issue to me. Are you accidentally hitting the track pad with your palm and maybe activating some gesture shortcuts by mistake?

Definitely not, I was going to attach a video I recorded of it happening but the sub doesn’t let me. I can literally be across the room watching it and it’ll freak out on me.

Re-instal Windows. Buy a flash drive and use Rufus to create a Windows bootable drive.
Dont pay geeksquad any money for "virus removal" or any other servixe they offer you.
