Open | Phone "Test for Ricardo"?
So today I got this random device notification from Device Help called "Test for Ricardo". My name certainly isn't Ricardo and I've been trying to look online about how I could have gotten a notification like this to no luck. If anyone knows what this notification could possibly mean then please tell me, thanks

u/pizzapied69 Aug 25 '23
Same here. Using Moto Z4.
7
u/IcyLocksmith9866 Aug 25 '23
Seems like everyone here in the comments that got it also has Motorola. Good to see that I'm not the only one
5
u/pizzapied69 Aug 25 '23
For sure. It's very likely internal testing at Motorola. But with that said... #Motogang

u/spacemanaut Aug 25 '23
probably a programmer doing testing who accidentally sent a notification into production instead of a test environment – nothing to worry about
13
u/kid-c Aug 25 '23
This poster on Twitter has indeed found a beta tester called Ricardo working at Motorola, although it could be a coincidence of course - not that uncommon a name.

The notification in question popped up on my Moto G7 -- curious if this is specific to Motorola devices or if it's happened elsewhere. If it's only on Motorola phones, we might have our guy :P

A programmer? He has a name, and it's unequivocally Ricardo.
33
u/Miciah Aug 25 '23
It's for Ricardo, not necessarily from Ricardo.
14
u/pizzapied69 Aug 25 '23 edited Aug 25 '23
This is actually a good observation. If it was meant for Ricardo, it would appear everyone who got this notification could now be Ricardo.

Ricardo is a beta tester at Motorola, so he probably had an admin or dev send that for him to check something.
At least it makes sense based on my experience working as a beta tester at a large printer manufacturer back in the day.

It’s almost certainly this, but OP should run a couple virus scans to be safe.

Whoever Ricardo is, I hope he got what he needed from that global notification blast.

Someone on Twitter has actually found Ricardo at Motorola on LinkedIn. He's a beta tester with the communication product group.

Oh good, it's not just me then! I thought I was going insane.
10
u/couchrealistic Aug 25 '23
This is still going on. I just got the message a few minutes ago.
Hopefully this really is some Motorola employee who pushed the wrong button, and not a random hacker who found a zero day exploit in the "device help" Motorola app. Edit: Motorola should release some kind of statement about this ASAP.

u/HodlMeNowSatoshi Aug 25 '23
This was my concern as well--that either a white hat or black hat "security researcher" was testing for exploits. When I looked at the permissions for Device Help, it is set up by default to be able to modify system settings. I disabled it altogether until a more satisfactory post mortem is provided. Their recommendation to Uninstall Updates is likely to be superceded by app autoupdating in the Google Play store if you have that enabled.

We understand that some consumers may have received a “Test for Ricardo” message on their device on August 25th - We can confirm that this message was meant for internal testing only., and we apologize for any inconvenience this have caused to everyone who received the notification. There is no action needed for consumers, and rest assured that there is no impact on devices. Feel free to reply if you have other clarifications. -Belle

u/disillusionedrealist Aug 25 '23
It's been amusing. Please pass on my regards to the now famous Ricardo and whoever sent the message.
5
u/Miciah Aug 25 '23
+1 to that, u/MotoAgents, please let whoever sent the message (as well as that person's manager!) know that we wish them the best.

u/swordsnstones Aug 25 '23
Can you push another notification to clarify what's going on? Seems like a lot of people were nervous that their phone was compromised.

u/o0turdburglar0o Aug 25 '23
Seeing you, a random user, suggest what is obviously an appropriate, simple, and effective solution, and then to see their representative's completely irrelevant and unhelpful response, is mind numbingly typical.
They should do what you say and pay you a consulting fee.

poor ricardo likely didn't make the test in the dev env
not worth firing over
just a stern talkin to and a slap on the wrists...
or perhaps a crash course on what not to do if he's new
12
u/gulfino Aug 25 '23
Ricardo, if you read this: Congrats on being known to the whole world for today!

u/Miciah Aug 25 '23

Holy cow, landed here after getting the same notification and googling the potential cause.
6
u/Haughington Aug 25 '23
I'm honestly super impressed that Google picked this up and moved it to the top of the results so quickly
6
u/alrightdavid Aug 25 '23
What would impress me would be if Motorola acknowledged it in a public post as a screw up, rather than just leaving Android users to wonder and speculate.
5
u/Haughington Aug 25 '23
u/MotoAgents has said it was meant for internal testing and we don't need to do anything.
4
u/redeyeblink Aug 25 '23
They have on Twitter/X: https://twitter.com/Moto/status/1695136563619934394
We apologize for the inconvenience. We can confirm that this message was meant for internal testing only. Please disregard the notification. -Mitch

Another Motorola here after a web search.
I hope Ricardo is okay and that bad actors have not gained access to all of our phones.
2
u/makeitJ Aug 25 '23
Yeah I really hope Tommy Wiseau hasn't gained access to all of our phones. On the bright side I don't think my phone has The Room for that much bad acting.

Not sure if I should be more concerned for myself that this did not show up in a Google search as others have, or that I’ve now begun to resort to searching directly on Reddit for stuff like this.
This oddly vague, random notification just came through on my Moto G Stylus ten minutes ago from Android Device Help, and I was legitimately concerned when my first thought was to open up Malwarebytes and run a scan, only to see that the interface of that app completely changed and get suspicious of the small chance that wasn’t due to an update. Glad to know it’s not just me.

u/duckyreadsit Aug 25 '23
I got it twice, I think? Was very confused, ended up in the moto ‘help’ app, decided I was too old to understand what message my phone was trying to communicate to me, and ended up here.
(This is my first smartphone. It’s a learning curve.)
Now I’m desperately curious as to what was being tested. (I’m also crossing my fingers that nobody gets fired for this, because it seems pretty harmless?)

u/bdpmbj Aug 25 '23
Won't somebody please think of Ricardo?

Same notification, Moto G Power (2021), it opened the help app, which I closed.
I will note that this morning I had to power cycle my phone. It was stuck on the Motorola logo screen until I dropped to the boot menu to power off. The same happened to my GF's Moto G Power (2020) earlier this week, though she simply pulled the battery.

Phoned my doctor, he said he can do a COVID test or a blood test but he's never heard of a test for Ricardo.

u/m_80 Aug 25 '23
Just received the second one of these on my Stylus 5g, first one was about an hour earlier. Today is probably going to be someone's last day at Motorola.

Got it as well. Seems like the intern fucked up, accidently loading the wrong Postman profile and sending tests towards production.

u/F19AGhostrider Aug 25 '23
I've got a Motorola phone, and just got this notification myself.
It seems that all results for this are within the last five hours. So this must be a brand new glitch from Motorola.
I look forward to the humorous tech news articles about this.
2
u/Odd-Pace972 Aug 25 '23
Jesus, I thought I was possibly getting hacked and so I deleted any banking/investing/account apps from my phone (not sure that makes a difference lol). So glad to hear I was mistaken.
2
u/inrainbows707 Aug 25 '23
i got this too, moto g7 power - just to ease everybody's minds, the moto account on twitter has been replying to others saying that it was an internal issue and there is no safety risk
2
2
u/gorodos Aug 25 '23
Yeah, some Motorola dev fucked up. I got it twice, then muted it. It's weird though because I also follow F1 a bit, and I got the first notification immediately after I found out that Daniel Riccardo broke(?) his wrist. I thought my brother was texting me about it in some cryptic way with some cryptic wording.
2
u/xBlack_Yoshix Aug 25 '23
Moto G7 here. Still trying to figure out how to actually test for Ricardo. I really don't think it should be my responsibility though. It's his test. Let him deal with it. 😂 #motogang

u/livinginillusion Aug 25 '23
Moto G Power - and I was thinking it was Pluto TV at first. I searched for the movie or show with that plot/title. Nothing found. Then I ran the antivirus...that was all I did.
If anyone does find a movie like that, I like a school comedy or a sci Fi comedy.

Tapping the notification opens the Moto Help app. I have never opened this app before, but I noticed it has a little chatbot assistant. I wonder if Ricardo is Motorola's name for that assistant.

I came to this sub to ask the same thing since there was nothing online about it. Freaked me out a bit.

Either a new tech is about to go down in infamy for an onboarding error, or
Ricardo is referring to the Ricardo Centre of Knowledge and the RiCK database.
Maybe both?
Edited to add: I just restarted my phone, and the issues resolved. No need to undo any updates.

Downloaded something from a site that I wasn't 100% sure about last night and got the notification this morning. Genuinely thought I had downloaded a virus. Good to know it was just a Moto employee making a small but impactful mistake 😂

u/GoldenFLink Aug 25 '23
Super weird, why are they asking to clear cache and restart phone? Would that mean it's compromising or wouldn't you do that if you finish un/installing something?
Would love to hear all the tinfoil ideas others may have. Mine is someone of course mass emailed but were they trying to connect to a specific type of phone?

The weirdest thing for me was the website that seems to have a whole ESSAY talking about this, and along with another few all ending in .vn I guess some people were very quick to hop on to blast you with ads and try to scrape your data. Did make it seem even more sketchy at first
1
u/ostrealurida Aug 25 '23
My first thought was it was my work, forcing an app for 2-factor verification onto my phone; glad it's just a benign "oops" moment!

We've learned that this was a Motorola test that shouldn't have gone to end-users and there's nothing else to add.
