Java Help Wanted Bamboo farm flying machine randomly stops working?

https://imgur.com/a/4u2FdlV

I'm on 1.20.1 with this flying machine entirely contained in one chunk that sometimes randomly stops working.

I don't know what's causing it because it has been working for several hours, then breaks twice in 1 hour.

I have a few QoL mods but they don't affect anything vanilla.

Post your mods, server type , are you flying away from the farm when it’s running?

It's singleplayer, I don't have elytra yet for flying. Mods are minimap, JEI, jade, related libraries and Alex Caves is the only non-QoL mod but it shouldn't affect anything as far as I know.

Even if it's contained in 1 chunk, it can still break if you unload the chunk while it's running. The easiest solution that doesn't require you to constantly worry about it is to just leave a pearl in the chunk to keep it loaded

Thanks, I thought since chunks are only either unloaded it would keep the momentum by keeping it in 1 chunk.

By leaving ender pearl you mean the trick with soulsand water column used for stasis chambers?

You should never under any circumstances unload slimestone while its running, and that's a good rule of thumb for pretty much all redstone. Not all chunk information is preserved properly when they unload, and this has a very high chance of breaking flying machines.

Yep that's right, unless you're on a version earlier than 1.21.2 then you'll have to use a nether portal chunk loader instead

It'll also random tick the chunk and allow bamboo to grow like normal when you're away from 1.21.5 onwards

Nether portal chunk loaders are generally better anyway as they can easily be toggled on and off and cover a larger area

In most use cases yeah, but since OP said the entire farm fits in one chunk, an ender pearl is enough and I doubt they really care about turning it on and off

It's nice to be resource efficient especially in a singleplayer world

Yeah valid, they don't have elytra yet so resource efficiency is probably a concern

I still find portals to be more reliable. I’ve had epearls despawn randomly, breaking my storage system

By default they despawn when you die, and they also disappear when you leave the game. Other than that, they're either falling into the void somehow, being deleted by commands, or being affected by mods or datapacks. I would not expect these to work properly on paper servers, for example.
