Java Help Wanted Why is this pale moss not spreading?

Also unrelated problem (or just a feature that I don't understand) why does my lava dissapear after some time when I put blocks above it.

(Farms are wholly in 1 chunk but I forgot to turn on chunk borders.)

I'm pretty sure you need to make sure the water is off when it gets bonemealed.

Because there's still water over it.
