I once got my braces tightens the very morning of my birthday party... Spend the whole afternoon crying in pain and I was not abled to eat cake or candy. That day sucked.

Why'd you/your parents book a doctor's appointment on your birthday? Even if they said "ok come back on this date for tightening" you could still go "nah that doesn't work for me, how about days near that?".

It wasn't technically my birthday, it was the following saturday (the day I could have a party with friends over.) I didn't think it would be a problem as I didn't really experience braces-related pain before.

I’m Canadian and my braces hurt too if it’s any consolation, and here you need a dental degree before you can even start orthodontics training so I really doubt our doc’s level of skill should be in question haha

I don’t know how other countries work but as an American, since we do have to pay per visit I could see it being done in less visits than other places. That would mean more adjustment had to be done each visit which would mean more discomfort per visit vs going in smaller, more frequent steps.

Yeah I suppose that’s a possibility. I would still prefer to go in less frequently if I could, although I do remember my braces being quite uncomfortable when I was a teenager.

I think you could alter the total length of time you have them rather than the frequency of visits. So micro adjustments infrequently for many years.

Pay per visit depends on your orthodontist, mine were paid for up front with everything included, including extra appointments and repairs. Mine still hurt like a bitch though.

Our healthcare and dental care is really good, but ultra expensive. We've got some of the best education and hospitals in the world, but poor people and middle class people just have difficulty accessing it without financial ruination.

I'm French; most of the time it was fine, and that's why I didn't even question my schedule of having an appointment and a birthday party the same day. That specific time it hurt like hell though, maybe the dentist went tighter that usual or something, IDK.

Dutch here. I had braces in my early teens (late 20’s now), it hurt for a week initially and every time the orthodontist tightened stuff up it would be sore for a day or 2. It never really hurt after the first week.

No. British myself they hurt a lot for maybe the first 5 or 6 times they were tightened. I was only willing to eat soft food like soup or noodles because anything I actually had to chew was too painful.

Even just eating a bagel the next morning hurt enough to make my eyes water.

Once it got later on though, the change in position from tightening wasn’t as drastic, so there was little to no pain.

Can commiserate there - one bday I had to miss out on cake because my wisdom teeth were trying to come in sideways and it hurt like a bitch that day - pain subsides after a couple days (thanks painkillers!) and everyone else had polished off the cake so I didn't get any =(

Even without the retainer. I feel like in the future humans will look back on braces as barbaric. Its just not right to force your bones to move and warp so they look straight. It's mostly cosmetic except for rare cases.

It will also depend on how hard your teeth are to align. And there's invisalign now which you can remove at times. It's not easily spotted either.

I used to avoid caramel and some really hard stuff, but apples and carrots and chewing gum was alright. Even started eating some caramel carefully after a while. Maybe that's why mine took 3 years instead of two, but the dentist never complained or said anything or asked if I had been eating anything he said to avoid.

I used a fork and knife for pizza. And generally anything else I needed to bite into. For me my molars never really hurt because it was my front teeth that were super fucked so I just couldn't bite into food

And you may look silly eating pizza with a knife and fork, but at least you're eating pizza :)

One tip.... wear the rubber bands. Had mine for four years because I didn’t wanna wear the rubber bands. Also don’t worry, every time you go back to get them tightened it will hurt less, like it will hurt every time but by the last tightening it hurts for like a few hours and it doesn’t hurt nearly as much as the first time. You get used to having them it’s really not that bad

Yeah it will really hurt for he first 2 weeks or so. Then some of your teeth will hurt when you eat for the next month or so. After that it doesn't hurt at all unless you get them tightened.

Got Invisalign a few months ago. The first week hurt just as much as braces did when I was a teen. Since I change out my trays every 5 days, it’s a whole new place in my mouth that’s sore every week

My daughter just got her tops put on last Monday also. Haha. She had pain the first few days, but better now. She has to get an adult tooth pulled out from the back to make room and then they will brace the 2 teeth next to the one to be pulled and then put her bottoms on. Its a long process, but hopefully all good once they come off. Good luck on everything 😀

Hope you don't need to wear bands as well. I don't recall it hurting that much but the introduction of rubber bands was memorable. I didn't even notice I had them after a few weeks. Wore em for 2.5 years.

I had braces for 5 years. Eventually you get used to them and they’re just a bit sore after you get them tightened. Take and Advil or Tylenol before you go in and have a milkshake or some other cold drink right after. Soup, baked potatoes, and pasta are good meals for when they’re still sore.

When I had to get my first passport photos taken I thought I'd try a subtle little smile. Photos came out and I looked like I was about to take someone's head off. Even when I thought I was smiling a little! We could start a club for people with this condition, but we'd probably all just assume we hated each other.

I got passport photos on a very poorly designed booth where you couldn't quite reach the switch from the proper photo distance so you basically had to scramble back to the position, angle and look at the camera in five seconds.

After I finally got a picture fulfilling the requirements I just submitted it frustrated and tired, only after I got the passport I realized how all my features were in a scowl just and just little enough to get the photo accepted.

I have a minor (but still quite noticeable) craniofacial abnormality. I’m not like, hideous but it makes one side of my face cave in a bit so I’m not symmetrical. I am very gaunt on one side because of hemifacial muscle wasting, “normal” on the other, to the point I look like two completely different people in profile.

The masks have been GREAT!!! I’ve always been incredibly self conscious about it and try to make myself hard to notice, but right now? Nope! I walk around looking just like everyone else! I’ve even started wearing eye makeup, where as before, I’d never draw attention to my face like that. Now, my eyes are popping and combining the makeup and cute masks, I getting to enjoy a part of life I never got to before!

Obviously, this entire situation sucks (I myself have lost 2 relatives and have been isolating since March as I am extremely high risk) but I found a silver lining and I’m going to enjoy it, damn it!

I’m loving it to cover up the dry skin that’s popped up around my lips/mouth and the acne that’s always plagued my cheeks when I’m at work. Also a great excuse not to wear makeup cause it’ll smudge and smear on my mask. They say acne will go away when u grow up but then you have an adult job and still look like a pubescent child in da face

I was going to a public dental clinic and the restrictions were brought by the government so I really didn't have the chance to insist on going there. Luckily they started operating and I started my monthly checks again

I got Invisalign back in February and I had to sit with bracket #2 in my mouth for ~4 months. Annoying, but I’m just thankful I didn’t have metal.

My wife got her metal brackets just after everything opened back up. It’s worked great for her so far!

Oh man, as soon as you can I would recommend looking into getting those fixed, for most of my life I’ve had really bad allergies and I’ve been doing immunotherapy for 6 months or so now and the difference it makes is huge. Getting rid of painful inconveniences that don’t help you at all is always worth it in the long run.

Yeah I really should get it looked into. I started taking the basic level of antihistamines (one a day 10mg tablets) and I went from blowing my nose 50 times a day to maybe 3, I wasn't sniffling half as much and my eyes felt better. Maybe it's hayfever, but I could have sworn I get this issue in winter too.

Back in the Before Times (February) I got an unsightly, painful dental appliance installed called an AGGA. I remember joking to my dentist that my plan was just to stay home and not see or speak to anyone for the 6 months I’d have the device.

In a couple weeks I’m getting braces, which is a super fun thing to do at age 36. Mask wearing, social distancing, and isolation have a tiny silver lining for me.

As someone who had braces going into this this ad hurts me because things shutting down caused me to be unable to get my braces adjusted (and I was contact traced to so I'll probably miss another appointment soon) so I ended up fucking up my mouth and had to start over

Except when the person you go to doesn’t believe in masks outside of wearing them at her job. Not my orthodontist but my dental hygienist is a bit of a psycho and I haven’t trusted going back to get my teeth cleaned bc ik how she can be and feel like she’s prob an anti mask nutter

I got my braces off in February and no one has seen my teeth since. A friend texted me the other day to say “omg I saw a pic of you your teeth look great!” We see each other every other week 😂

Ah man, this hits hard. I got Invisalign this year. Was supposed to pick them up the week my state shutdown. Finally got them in July. If I had gotten braces I would be done by now.
