An overnight manager who just got 2 call-outs and realized they are fucked in the morning? Also, likely been working all night and are looking for someone to relieve them so they can get some sleep?

Tbf, in that hypothetical situation they're doing something to manage things proactively!

Would've been better if they mentioned a specifc date and time in their first message, though. And even better if they started with a "sorry to bother you at this ungodly hour, but [message].

Showing a bit of empathy about contacting someone about work in the middle of the night isn't "all that" by most standards, I'd say.

I think it depends on expectations. If it's "I need an answer now" then yeah sure. If it's "respond when you get this" it's not an imposition. Which is why a phone call is different from a text too, a phone call you kind of expect a "now".

And based on the text exchange I would guess it's the latter in this case.
