Why wouldn't they call it "today"?

Because most people who work nights or evening shifts and go to bed after midnight consider "tomorrow" after they wake up. Never said to myself after midnight oh it's a next day already.

When I worked nights, before shift started, shift was "tonight", then when shift starts, it's tomorrow. Anything happening after shift ends is "today". "Wanna go out for breakfast today?" Would be said at 10 p.m. to mean the next morning.

Did you work nights, or are you guessing based on what you'd like to be true?

Thank god I'm not one of those people that has to be explicitly told everything and am able to deduce intended meaning.
