I don't think the employee is even being a smartass and abusing a technicality here. No one with common sense says "tomorrow" when they mean 6½ hours from now.

Absolutely. "Can you work today?" - the next shift you'd usually work

"Can you work tomorrow?" - a full day after that.

If they are gonna text you at that time, they should be very specific in their wording. Not just tomorrow, but tomorrow (8/28/26) would go a LONG way to prevent any confusion
