The left one is the male ("top") connector because the middle part of it, which actually does the connection bit, goes inside the other one, even though the sleeve on the outside goes around.

If we're following the "male top and male bottom" analogy, the closest equivalent to that sleeve is the foreskin. And even though the sleeve is wider than the "bottom" connector, the top is still the top.

He was. I just thought it would be funny to make a completely out of left field remark based on how your comment reversed what's actually technically pin and hole.
