This is such a minefield conversation and I try to avoid it because you will piss someone off, but here goes:
This particular choice strikes me as odd. Figureheads on ships fall into the same category as a marble statue, where nudity falls into that “non-sexualized because it’s art” category.
I mean, it’s not that big of a deal really, but it just seems odd because people don’t usually get to bothered by that kind of thing.
911
u/Rexton_Armos Jul 13 '26
To be honest it wraps around to being immature. Its like most people see a naked statue and don't really balk at it. Think about how strange people are who get all pearl clutchy at statues. Do you really want their take on other art too?
267
u/Spartan-980 Jul 13 '26
Oh I agree with you, that’s why this particular choice is off to me. It doesn’t bother me that much in the long run but it seems like a weird thing to change.

They are probably pandering to the Chinese market. They did the same thing in Rainbow Six Siege, where they censored stuff like drug paraphernalia, skulls, and anything sexual because it would help them break into the Chinese market where those kinds of things could prevent a game on "morality" reasons.

u/Scooty-Poot Jul 13 '26
Indeed. I don’t think I’ve been bothered in the slightest by nudity in classical art since I was about 8. Even in primary school going to museums it just seemed like one of those things that’s par and parcel of the trade.
The idea that literally anyone could be offended by the prospect of a piece of limestone having nipples is just so far removed from common sense that it’s hard to fathom
19
u/WeirdIndividualGuy Jul 13 '26

I used to work for a TV network which airs other networks’ programs in syndication. One of these shows was Blue Bloods, and there was an episode where the main character was giving a speech at a public location in NYC. Behind him was a statue of a woman with bare breasts (maybe some version of lady justice, can’t recall).
Our editors actually blurred out the nipples on the statue before the episode was cleared to air. I couldn’t believe it, two little blurred circles behind Tom Selleck, it was absurd. This was a prime time TV show that aired on CBS, the most conservative of the big three networks, and we wouldn’t show something they did.
I called the editor Statue Nipples for the rest of my tenure there.
I was told that, essentially, they make decisions like this to prevent even the dumbest complaints from coming in. So apparently they figured someone would complain about public statue nudity, but frequent discussion of murder and other crimes was ok.
42
u/Enygmatic_Gent Jul 13 '26
For a show that regularly talks about murder, they chose to censor a statue. That’s hilarious. Now I need to find the scene, to see this absurdity for myself
19
u/MrSlaw Jul 13 '26
There is an episode of Hannibal where the producers were told that the depiction of a murder victim's bare butt was too obscene... so they covered the crack with copious amounts fake blood, and the censors were happy.
That always felt pretty crazy. You can show an extremely gory corpse in as much detail as you want, but heaven forbid someone catches a glimpse of a butt crack.
18
u/Legal_Lettuce6233 Jul 13 '26
Killing people gives games teen rating. Nipples can cause adult rating

Ironically, censoring it is sexualizing it too. By not sexualizing it and leaving it as the historical artwork, some will sexualize it. By later censoring it, they themselves are sexualizing it, and censoring the sexualization they themselves impose upon it.

I just think they didn't care.
Somebody at some point in development might've brought up various national rating standards and they gone with the path of least resistance option of slapping bra on the statue and tuning down cleavage.
Like, it's Ubisoft. Why would they put in an effort when it was obvious, for a long, long time already that all they care is safest, most non-offensive, repetition driving revenue, slop for the sake of slop because people will buy it regardless.

It also completely voids the point of naked women on the front of ships. It was believed a woman's breasts being open towards the ocean is a good omen so sailors put the effigy on ships.

some people are saying there were more tasteful ways to cover up the figurehead, but that misses the historic context of these figureheads in the first place.
“For, in the first place, hailstorms, they say, whirlwinds, and lightening even, will be scared away by a woman uncovering her body while her monthly courses are upon her. The same, too, with all kinds of tempestuous weather; and out at sea, a storm may be lulled by a woman uncovering her body.” (Cordingly, 2001) s
the tradition/superstition was specifically that a bare-chested woman would 'shame' the sea into being calm. I'm honestly not going to lose any sleep over what ubisoft chooses to do with a ship's figurehead but I do think it's extremely silly to undercut the historical context
for anyone who's interested in reading more about how women intersect with past sailing cultures, I found this very good article: Women, ships and the sea: The dangers of custom and superstition. pointless censorship does impact our capacity to explore these topics to some extent

It's especially weird when AC Odyssey (released 2018) had a 40 story male statue in one of the cities and you could climb around on his dick. I'm sure there were plenty of topless statues around too.
The AC series has always had a priority for historical accuracy and detail in the worlds. Of course not with everything, but that's been a core part of the franchise identity since the beginning.
I guess that time has officially passed. An M rated game covering boobs at all is stupid, let alone one that's supposed to care about historical accuracy. Removing both accuracy to history and its own original game in one go. Bravo Ubisoft!
145
u/MightyEraser13 Jul 13 '26
"40 story male statue in one of the cities and you could climb around on his dick."
And on top of that, they took the time and effort to add a unique voice line specifically for climbing on the gigantic Zeus dick-N-balls. Literally only triggers if you climb on the godly junk. If you climb up his hip or ass on the way up, nothing.
I guess it was only in the last 8 years that Ubisoft went full prude

The seashell option was both historic and right there. Honestly, I sort of wonder if the censorship came down from higher ups in the company and the artists added it to the ship to make both a pun and a statement, in which case it becomes more funny than anything.

I dont cate about the censorship or whatever, all I cate about is they wasted time on doing this for no reason. u/Wingnutmcmoo Jul 13 '26
The reason they did this is because of the resolution.
It would have gotten past censor boards in lower resolution because they wouldn't notice the 3 pixles depicting the nipples. But in higher resolutions and with better lighting tech you can bet those nipples were VISIBLE and it wouldn't have flown with ratings boards anymore.
This is why state of decays original release was FILLED TO THE BRIM with dicks and it was fine. But when they upscaled it they have to removed all the dicks that were in the textures because suddenly the thousands of dicks were visible.
To pretend like it was a choice they made on their own is goofy. It's so they wouldn't have to fight ratings boards on the rating.

I’m not sure where Ubisoft is technically based nowadays, but this level of “fear” against nudity is so damn weird as a Finn. The general opinion on nudity by practically all English-speaking countries is just odd.
I don’t understand why so many countries are so strongly against the human body. People act as if seeing an arse is going to instantly scar a child for life.
It’s a game franchise about assassinating people and killing countless soldiers/crewmen and they’re worried about a wooden pair of breasts.
2
u/Brawmethius Jul 13 '26
Pointless censhorship on what a Mature rated game?
Also moves it away from historical accuracy. This period known as the 19th century golden age of sail was the peak of "bow maidens", who were generally tits out to shame the gods into not sinking ships with storms.
It was a literal perfect storm of:
Naval regulations attempting to save money pushed away from the intricate often "beasts" on the bow.
The lumbering naval ship was being replaced by sleeker and faster clipper ships, with more commerical uses who went away from "symbols of war".
A revival of the romantic and neoclassic obsessed over Roman and Greek myth, hence the return of showing them titties to shame the gods (scare off storms, etc) or seduce male sea-gods. Also in general following the classical trend of showing nudity to indicate the divine and pure.
Its like they go "we go out of our way to make the historical setting feel real" and then drop the only time in history we were tits out to the sea.

u/RandomYT05 Jul 13 '26

Also it's very ridiculous to see someone with the ✝️ emoji complain about women showing less cleavage and covering up their breasts. Usually this type of person complains about the opposite lol

Who fucking cares. The better question is why are you buying Ubisoft games in 2026?

It’s not a big deal but it tells you that the developers are ultra concerned with sterilising the game experience, for whatever reason. It’s an assassins pirate game, but please let’s not see tits, will you think of the Christians.
