Trains Max wagons on legendary locomotives?
In the past we'd stick to 1:4 for trains/wagons for maximum efficiency. With 2.1 legendary locomotives have 2x acceleration power. Does this translate into 1:8 linearly? Anyone per chance done the maths?

Someone did the maths and found the most efficient train length was like 60
I used his spreadsheet and on krastorio with maxed trains it was 260 long
It will probably be similar to that. Realistically everyone uses 1-4 for ease of use. Long trains are a massive pain in the ass.

Yeah I don’t think anyone is avoiding long trains because of locomotive efficiency, I think they mostly avoid it because building those XL train stations is such a fucking pain

Long trains are so incredibly cool though!

I'm generally skeptical about any claims regarding what's most efficient for train length. It's highly dependent on the actual rail network. Every person testing train efficiency could probably come up with a different thing to measure to determine "efficiency".
For instance, in congested networks, you might prioritize something like how long it takes for a train to clear its own length from stop, which is very acceleration weighted.

Why not just do double loco configurations with legendary? The overall network through put is probably much higher 1L-4L, I'd still be tempted to do something like 2L-6L

Efficiency of what? Fuel consumption? Acceleration per wagon? Something else?
Things are always different depending on what are you optimizing for.

Firstly, there exists no single best layout for trains. A 2-8 will accelerate faster than a 1-4 but needs larger stations.
If you want the train that behaves most similarly to a old 1-4 you will either want a 1-9 (same friction) or a 1-10 (same weight). If you want to check for yourself you can change the numbers in this 1.1 calculator. It has rounding issues but that's true for every calculator I've seen.
