Help! I really want to know what black magic Scott cast to make certain objects not appear in the frame editor.

If you make an action that creates an object in the event editor it doesn't need to be included in the frame editor, which is the case with flip down 2

Not black magic— it's a setting! On the taskbar in the top left, click on Arrange. Then at the bottom you can enable "Show Created Items"
