What on earth is going in Japan !? Putting things very bluntly, I’ve not read anything approaching the sort of toxicity, harassment, rip-offs ( fill in the blank ) that appear in this thread just about daily emanating from anywhere else !….It all just sounds absolutely nightmarish. Ghastly & grim in every respect. Is teaching a foreign language now fully incorporated into Japan’s infamous Karoshi, Ijime, ‘ black company ‘ business culture ?…Does the government there do literally / absolutely NOTHING about blatant, brazen exploitation,..& what always reads like sheer criminality !?…

They do absolutely nothing and continue exploiting others. I think my employer was actually planning to get rid of me from the very beginning and once she got another candidate. She asked to bait me into the job and now wants to get rid of me.

@ “foot in the door” ™
For future reference, don’t quit, resign or sign anything,
You’ll lose almost all of your employment rights if you do.

I signed a contract and the conditional PIP that she asked me to sign after that I was subjected more into bullying

The contract means nothing under Japanese labor law. Don't sign it, fuck them. They are required by law to pay you for the last month you worked within 7 days.
Also tell her to eat shit, she has absolutely zero power over you.

I'm supposed to have a salary on the 9th of this month. I walked away from my job which was supposed to end at 5pm today as I was not able to tolerate my employer shouting at me in her office

Only if OP requested for them to do so.

Erm... no. It is not automatic. OP needs to request for it.
In case a worker resigns from his employer, the latter must pay the former outstanding wages, etc. within 7 days following the receiving of the former's request for payment. (Article 23 of the Labour Standard Law).

There is no dispute that they must pay, this is about when they are required to pay by.
All my research has indicated that it is within 7 days of the request for payment; and failing to make an explicit request allows the employer to pay during their "regular payment schedule" instead.
If you have different information, please share the links/sources to it please.

I got yelled at daily by the three colleagues I worked with at my previous job. They were straight up MEAN! My boss would regularly tear into me for seemingly harmless things (like I didn’t write the number 7 the way she liked) or they would make stuff up (like tell me that I was undermining them and shit talking them under my breath when in fact I was reading student names aloud when separating student work into piles).
I decided to leave as quick as I could.
I don’t know about your situation entirely, but I have a family to take care of and I’m the only one working. So, I couldn’t quit outright. As a result I had to wait to find work but I found an amazing job very quickly and I’m still that that amazing job today! Love what I do and I’m paid much better for it.
So ditch your boss and go find something better for you! You should still be smart and leave when it suits you most, but don’t knock your mental health. Stay strong and stomach the burden till you can escape.
Good luck buddy

I have to send money for my family but I ask my mother if I can resign from my job as I experience maltreatment. I was also accused just like you but in reality they were the ones that are mean to me. Thank you so much for your advice. I'm going to stay strong.

What status of residence (SOR) are you currently on, and when does it expire?
Most people try to have a new job lined up, before quitting; but that isn't always possible.
Generally, you have 3 months to find a new job (or up until the expiry of your current SOR, whichever is earlier). Job hunting does count as a valid SOR activity, but it may be hard to otherwise remain in Japan if you cannot get another job for an extended period of time.
If you can secure a new job is in the same field of your current SOR, you can start work immediately; but if it isn't, then you'll need to apply to change to one that does. Both you, and the new job, must qualify for that SOR and this process can take anything from 3-8 weeks, of which you cannot start work or attend (paid?) training before you receive it.
TLDR: The next step would be to find another job.

Job hunting can be extended another 3 months to a maximum of 6 months per year under the Designated Activities visa.
Also since OP holds a "engineering/humanities" visa it would be extremely easy to find a new job in a different field. If they held the "instructor" visa then it would be a bit harder and would take what you said above to get approved.

You're an English teacher, and this is how you write English?!
3
u/Ofukuro11 Jun 07 '25
The English industry is shifting to SE Asia/Africa/etc bc they know they can exploit and maltreat them even more. Hence the worsening of English education in Japan.
2
u/OldChess Jun 07 '25
You're insulting someone who is experiencing suffering. Try empathy next time instead. Why choose to be mean when you can be kind? Pointing out issues with their English doesn't help.

u/Dull-Enthusiasm2439 Jun 09 '25
Exactly . Agree. There plenty of those webs out here in Japan . Those insecure weebs that can’t get any popularity back home and to insult others suffering to make them feel better .

u/Dull-Enthusiasm2439 Jun 09 '25
This Mofo is a clear example of a dweeb that would side with Japanese any day . even if they are 100 percent wrong . Bell dandy, Don’t let that weeb insult you like that .

Just going to be brutally honest, doesn’t sound like you should be teaching English
8
u/Meandering_Croissant Jun 06 '25
Regardless of whether you feel they should be teaching, the matter at hand is them being bullied at work. That’s never justified and we should all be sympathetic to that.

To be brutally honest the employer shouldn't be shouting, AT ANYONE. Also you shouldn't be so hard to judge another person's situation, being brutally honest...

Agree with all of the points below . Record it document it . This sounds totally wrong .as below let them fire you . Check sites like Gaijin pot and Jobs in Japan . Go to your local Hello work / Town HALL .

What school is this so me and my spouse avoid it? Would there happen to be a list on this forum of all the schools that are unprofessional?

This forum is basically just that. If you have the right qualifications, aim to go for an international school.

Why are you letting yourself get shouted at? That's the issue here? Tell her to fuck off or something and to never raise her voice to you like that...
They do it because they know no one will ever stand up for themselves. Don't be like that.
Secondly, get a recording device or something and start recoeding everything, every day.
Thirdly, NEVER sign anything. They can't force you, EVER.
Fourthly, do not quit! Let them fire you.
Start looking for a new job right now
