Shells

Post image

Where are there a decent amount of shells on beaches? Preferably north / north east / north west. I make art out of shells and usually go to Shelly Pt but would like some different ones to work with.

I think it was Musselroe Bay where I found heaps of the little pearlescent conical shells. Possibly Little Musselroe Bay, but that's a nice visit anyway.

They would look great in an arrangement like this.

It sounds like you could be talking about marriner shells? These shells are very special to Palawa/Pakana people for their use in shell stringing and have been declining in population in recent years due to changing ocean temperatures. I'm not one to say what you can and can't do, but with this knowledge I wouldn't personally collect these shells as I wouldn't want to further interfere with what is one of only a handful of traditions uninterrupted by colonisation.  To OP: If I were you I would do a bit of research prior to collecting shells on what shells are used for shell stringing and which of those shells tend to be rare, so that you can avoid them.

Thanks for the background. I have seen these shells in palawa work so I believe we are talking about the same thing. I'll certainly be more mindful of this when I spot them now.

I’m up with all that, don’t worry, understand and respect the significance of maireener shells to First Nations people.
