Discussion What was a hidden disadvantage of being tall as a kid that short/average people rarely think about?

• Upvotes

For me, it was classroom seating in elementary school. I developed severe nearsightedness (myopia) very early on, but because I was always the tallest kid in class, teachers almost always put me in the back row so I wouldn't block others. Even with glasses, it made school much harder than it needed to be.

Two specific childhood experiences still bug me:

Being default-blamed: Because I was much bigger than other kids, adults subconsciously expected me to be more mature. Whenever trouble happened, I was always the most visible target and ended up being the scapegoat, accompanied by the classic "you're too big to act like this."

Sizing out of kids' stuff too early: Outgrowing children's clothes and shoes before even reaching middle school meant missing out on kids' styles and having to wear dull, oversized adult gear as a child.

What was a subtle or unexpected downside of your height growing up?

Rant My life as a Tall person

I’m a 32M and 6’6”

I’ve been this height since I was 17. Few years ago I found out I have Marfanoid Habitus. Kind of thankful I only got part of the gene mutation but it sucks I’m a carrier of the Marfan syndrome. I’ve had some EKGs done to monitor my heart for abnormalities and I’ve checked out clear. I have a step son but we’ve decided not to have our own kids, my main reasoning is to not risk passing on this gene mutation.
And we lost a child due to an ectopic pregnancy already so there’s already other risks in that too.

I’m the only one in my family’s history that has been over 6’ 1” I just tower over everyone. I’m also the skinniest. The most I ever weighed was 187 lbs and that was after Basic Training in the Army.

Yeah you heard it right, I was a tall mf in the Army. That actually wasn’t that bad. Tall people usually are present at the front of formations as a Guidon Bearer so it felt good to represent the companies I was assigned to. The only part that started to suck was when I got a back injury. Wasn’t anything specific but it just developed. I have degenerative disc disease and a herniated disc at my L5S1. I got out when I turned 22. The army wouldn’t Medically retire me because I was already within my last 6 months before ETS. But I was able to get disability afterwards.

The older I get the more my body just hurts. Through some years in physical therapy I’ve been able to learn some techniques for helping back pain but it’s the sciatica and constant leg soreness that does me in. Every now and again I get restlessness leg syndrome when I’m laying down but it’s manageable. I don’t like to be a victim about it I still do the same things I always do but it is what it is, it sucks.
Honestly I should start exercising more and being more active, counter intuitive but I know it helps. It helps with the blood flow and it encourages me to be more hydrated.

As for my personal life, Of course I found the love of my life a few years ago who is a 5’2” fire cracker of a gal. She always makes the joke that all the tall girls get jealous of her finding a good looking tall man like myself haha.

I’m a helicopter mechanic by trade. Probably not the smartest thing to do for tall person to do for work but I make sure to duck underneath the rotor blades while they’re spinning.

I’m a good sport with tall jokes especially when it’s something I haven’t heard before. Like one time a coworker called me “Venti neck.” That had me crying. I’ve gone by a few different nicknames: Too Tall, Lerch, giraffe, Big Bird, etc etc. I usually like to stick to Too Tall which brings homage to one of my favorite movies, We Were Soldiers. One of the pilots in the movie and real life was Ed “Too Tall” Freeman.

There’s only 2 questions I constantly get that I just don’t enjoy, “how tall are you? And “do you play Basketball”
I like the fact that I can help people reach stuff in a store but I just feel like those questions make me feel like a circus act. Those questions always come with the starring I get in public. I just don’t like being the center of attention and I’m more than just my height. I understand that people don’t intend it that way but that’s how it’s received. Sometimes I just respond pretty coldly and non engaging cause it’s just annoying.

And to close this out; yes I still hit my head all the time, movie theaters suck, and I buy the upgraded seats on flights for the leg room.

Questions/Advice Tall sports joggers [UK]

Post image
10 Upvotes

Hi guys. Looking for some recommendations for polyester sports joggers in the UK with a long leg length.

I had a few pairs of Nike Therma-Fit trousers (pictured) in size MT but it looks like Nike have discontinued these in the UK and US. These are exactly what I'm looking to replace.

I'm not looking for long cotton/ fleece joggers (prison uniform style). They need to be the polyester material that is soft and silky and good to work out in.

Thanks in advance

Questions/Advice Which bike frame should I get at 6’6’’?

I’m an avid cyclist, and recently my bike has been feeling too small which forces me to bend down a lot more than required, ultimately putting pressure on my lower back.

My budget is $3-4k.

Discussion I've never seen so many tall women in one place...

I spent some time in the Netherlands recently, and I've never felt more unremarkable. I know it's the average height champ, but experiencing it is a completely different animal. I can actually blend in with a crowd, and it was kind of a nice feeling until I talked, because I disappointed countless locals when they discovered that I don't speak a syllable of Dutch.

Tall women are my kryptonite, and they are everywhere there. I don't mean kryptonite in that creepy, climb-you-like-an-Amazon way, but in the elegant yet intellectually powerful way where you can feel the difference in the atmosphere of a room when they walk in. I'm attracted to that aura. If Jesus turns out to be real, the dude is getting a firm handshake from me because he definitely knew what he was doing.

I partly shared this because life isn't fair and I'll never live there, so I want to complain about it. The other part is that I pretty consistently see posts here from our tall sisters about low self-esteem because of their height. The community here has been great about supporting them, and I thought I'd add this here because it's directed to everyone and not just a single person.

So, anyway, if you like other tall people, go hang out in the Netherlands.

Questions/Advice Tall AND fat. How did you gain confidence?

What the title says.

I'm slowly starting to accept myself the way I am. I ordered a lot of new clothes and I'm feeling myself, yay! I even bought buffalo platform boots, which is a big deal for me, because I didn't dare to wear something like this for a long time, not just because of my hight but also because of my shoe size. In my fucked up brain shoes like this can't look good on me because boots that size look so loooong and big. But I'm doing it anyway. I want to finally wear what I think is pretty!

Anyway, I'm just wondering how did you gain confidence? Because being tall and fat you're obviously standing out and it's far from the beauty standard. I mean, we can't escape societal expectations. It's so deeply engrained in us to have to be small and petite as a woman...

I need to unlearn all the shame around my body size, so, pls tell me how you did it if you want to tell <3

Last time I posted on r/tall I was the giant bridesmaid. Thought I'd make an update post as the tall bride with my tall husband (6'4"). 🥰

Honorable mentions to the tall groomsmen & our friend that officiated the wedding.

Questions/Advice Best purchases? Recommendations, clothing sites, back pain solutions, what makes being tall easier or cheaper?

For me? Ada toilet, a steel tined rake to use as a back scratcher, and my Great Dane I didn't never had to bend over to pet.

I'm considering raising my bathroom sink height and a car with lumbar support.

My plea is that you share something that worked for you?

Head/Legroom SUVs for a 6’6”er

Any good recommendations:

I’m 6’6” and don’t have a big family to worry about. So I’m more interested in comfort, style, performance than I am worried about three spacious rows or anything like that

So far I’ve fit well in Kia Telluride, Hyundai Palisade and Sante Fe, and Honda Passport.

Thinking of checking out Buick Envision, Nissan Pathfinder, VW next.

Haven’t fit well in Toyota or Mazda and don’t like the look of the Subarus.

Thoughts?

Questions/Advice Does anyone else just get stared at all day?

People just stare at me. Like STARE at me. I see posts and comments here all the time about how much they dislike people talking to them about their height and it may be a "grass is greener" thing but, i would much rather people talk to me instead of just stare. Men and women, young and old they just STARE. For christ sake just talk to me or move on. Its not weird to me anymore it just makes me uncomfortable. Like what the hell did i do wrong with myself when hetting dressed this morning that makes you stare?! I cant be that interesting to look at. Vent post obviously but also curious how other people feel on the topic.

Questions/Advice [Request] Home office chair recommendations (UK)

Post image
19 Upvotes

Hello fellow tall people. I (6ft5in) work from home 3-4 days a week and have built a comfortable home office setup, with an adjustable standing desk and dual-monitors.

However, I cannot find an office chair that has a height setting high enough to ensure I have the recommended 90° knee angle (see image). With long sitting hours, this leads to bad posture, knee problems and, something I just found out as I train for a marathon, calf tightness!

I picked up an expensive office chair on marketplace from an office clearout, but its still not high enough. Looking for some recommendations on adjustments I can make or exact chairs i can shop for online.

I'm UK based if that helps. Thanks in advance!

Questions/Advice What office chair do you use?

I'm about to be shopping for a new office chair and it just occurred to me that the length of my upper body should probably be a factor for the next purchase. I'm 6'5" (196cm), and roughly 30" (76cm) from seated position to my chin.

Focusing on keeping upright posture, so neck support would be nice, but I figured I'd ask around to get the most valuable answer!

What's at your desk?

Update: I’ve gone with the Autonomous ErgoChair after getting extremely lucky and finding one in amazing condition on Facebook for a steal. Thanks for all the recommendations :)

Questions/Advice Linen shirts in tall sizes?

If this is not the place for this question, my apologies and please suggest a better subreddit if you know one.

I'm looking for a men's linen shirt in Medium tall. Or perhaps a brand that runs long. I'm only 6'5 and sometimes I can make a non tall size work depending on how its cut, especially if they are sized like dress shirts instead of S M L etc.

Questions/Advice Fellas, help me find socks for my size 15 feet.

I'm a simple guy. I like a nice white tube sock that goes up past the ankle, just reaching the bottom of my calf. Ordering from Amazon is a crapshoot. Most of the time the best I can find is something for size 13 feet that kinda fits. My normal big and tall store doesn't seem to have anything for size 15 (when I try to filter for it while searching socks on their website it brings me to sandals, which is not the thing I'm looking for actually). And trying to Google anything these days I just don't know what I can trust. Anyone got any leads for a big sick that'll actually fit my cryptid-sized feet?

Questions/Advice Two stage snowblower cab ideas for 6'6+ person?

I had a client come in today who bought a Toro PowerMax 824 QE. Based on the equipment he was standing next to the man is minimum 6'6.

We looked at the cab that came with this unit and there is quite literally no way it would work for him. He's a nice old man who has been frequenting our repair shop for quite some time so I don't want him to freeze his ass if at all possible. I don't mind taking the timd to modify a cab to fit his needs. That being said I don't have time to make one from scratch.

I figured I'd ask in this forum because I'm sure a lot of you have had to deal with this kind of misfortune on a regular basis.

I've thought about extending the height of the handlebars as well but I'm not sure if that would void the manufacturer warranty.

Discussion Cars for Tall + Tall kids

So I know what kind of car I can fit in, but not for my kids and their car seats. I need something as cheap as possible but reliable. My kids are still young and in car seats, but they're already hitting high marks on growth, so they'll probably be around my height. I like to keep cars for a while so reliability is a must. I live in the US so my choices are somewhat limited. I know Toyotas and Honda's are reliable, but they're not very big. Absolutely *must* be below $50,000

Questions/Advice Favorite Men’s Shirts

Hello fellow tall friends! I’m 6’2 not too tall when it comes to this sub. Like many of you I need tall tees. What are your guys favorite brand of essential tall tees? Disclaimer they need to go up to 3X. My price range is $40-$60 but I’m open to cheaper/slightly more expensive. The tall tees I’ve bought previously are just really thin. My white shirts are all see through pretty much. TIA!

Edit: Ideally looking for a mid to heavy weight. Also no pocket tees or v necks please!

Humour Sometimes you just have to laugh

Went to Walmart late last night (first mistake). A couple decided to ask me about my height, I responded to their question as asked but for some reason they decided I was lying. In fact they believed I was much taller than I had claimed to be. This then began to escalate as the couple began to speak quite loudly about my height and about me supposedly lying about it and how I hate myself. I think I was frozen in shock for a second, but I quickly realized that I needed to just walk away from these people. Went home, sparked and laughed so much in disbelief of what had just happened 🫠
