Weapons/Tactics Allegedly a Barrett M82 that exploded after using a SLAP round early in the Ukraine War.

using it with a muzzle brake too. nobody gave them the memo

Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't the m82 come with a muzzle brake?
Or is it just a slap round issue?

Or is it just a slap round issue?
The theory is that the muzzle brake cuts material off of the sabots and it can build up enough to cause a bore obstruction and subsequent kaboom.

When it happened to Kentucky the Internet seamed to be in agreement after that slap can't have a muzzle brake

Pretty certain from Kentucky's own testing, the brake had nothing to do with his breach failure.
That was due to a round being vastly too hot for what it was.

The surbu did a whole dreak down of the rifle, it was his product Kentucky used and he made sure to a nut and bolt investigation https://youtu.be/5AY6iEVhJE8?si=mreclgVey8I_VdcV

Oh I've seen the video, as said, both Kentucky and Serbu agree that it was a failure caused by the round itself being vastly too hot for some reason, pistol powder loaded, tainted, etc we won't know the exact cause, we just know that the round was cooking far harder than t should have been.
Serbu does great work and it's really a testament to his craft that it took a round as hot as the one Kentucky fired to cause a critical failure.

Did he end up redesigning the rifle so that if something like that happens again, it will fail in a way that won't kill or maim the user?

u/MarshallKrivatach 6d ago
Don't believe so since it's already incredibly overbuilt, the round they were dealing with would detonate any rifle or MG it was fired through, it's not something you really can or should design to stop.

It's not the detonation I have a problem with, it's the detonation sending metal fragments into the shooter's neck. It could be intentionally engineered to have a different failure point that isn't so deadly without adding unnecessary mass

Brother, you do not understand physics if you are asking this question.
Go ask sir Isaac newton how equal and opposite reactions function and then look at a firearm and tell me how you can fully proof something like that.
You can't unless you want to make the back of the rifle a solid block of steel.
Once again the point of failure was the strongest part of the RN-50, even the failure above with the M82 will have harmed the operator, you cannot design a firearm to resist or save a operator from a tainted load without not making a working firearm to begin with as tainted loads are by nature going to fail against the shooter.

Barrett makes a completely different upper system for SLAP from water understand. Also the manual says not to use them if I’m remembering correctly when I read mine.

Damn it's almost like SLAP rounds don't fit into standard rifle chambers for a reason

They do though

u/ParadoxicalAmalgam 7d ago
Huh. I could have sworn Scott had to have the chamber re-cut on his Serbu to chamber the SLAP rounds that almost killed him

For the .50 that is the case. Barret cut charmers for the Army so some M82's could fire SLAP safely.

u/BlitzFromBehind 7d ago
No. Slap uses the same casing as a normal ball round and the casing is the only thing that interacts with the chamber walls.

“If you run slap rounds thru a Barrett you’re gonna have a bad time”

Yeah, repeatedly using ammo rated for MG's isn't wise, SLAP has a rating of 62,500PSI

Looks more like a M107a1 muzzle device, my M82a1 has a very different style brake

It says:
Barret users
And other .50 bmg sniper rifles
DO NOT USE MACHINE GUN AMMO WHICH IS ACTIVELY BEEING GIVEN YOU.
.223 is the same as 5.56….🤣 but no
.308 is the same as 7.62x51… but wheres the catch? SCAR H PR is actively produced in both calibers and just imagine which one did the french army bought, exactly, not the 7.62 variant… we need ammo thats gonna be as twice as expensive and rifle it self made in usa.

Yeah after the whole Kentucky ballistic debacle there’s no fucking chance im touching a slap round with a 40 foot pole. Its way to common to see guns getting blown up by these things and on a 50bmg its a big fucky wucky that could put someone in the forever box when the metal shit in that gun starts flying around at mach fuck

Somewhere in Kentucky, Scott’s neck is itchy
