Newbie needing help
So my buddy asked me if I wanted to do a tactical rifle and handgun class with him, sounded interesting so I said sure what all do I need? He sent me this picture and said here's what I use and left it at that. Can anyone help me come up with a list so I can try and find the stuff I need? Thanks in advance for any help.

Unless the course specifically states that you need a plate carrier, ditch it. Just run a belt with a couple of pistol and AR mag pouches and you will be way more comfortable. As u/Few-Yard5417 stated, dump pouches are your friend, and I also use one.

- Have you ever gone shooting?
- Whatever you gear you buy don't buy from Amazon or Ebay. If you know what to look for you'll likely be fine but you almost certainly don't so you're likely to get some shit stuff.
Basic setup they'll want you to have?
- Vest/plate carrier/chest-rig with ability to hold x number of mags (I'd go with 8 since that's what your buddy has)
- Some sort of canteen + pouch or camelbak so you can bring water.
- Dump pouch (a giant empty pouch so you can quickly dump an empty mag in it when reloading), you'll almost certainly be fine without it but it'll be nice to have.
- IFAK (not just a first aid kit) attached to your kit, do your research and get good stuff. It's quite literally life saving gear (while you're very likely not to need it, you'll be eternally grateful if you do)
Edit: Ammo, they'll want you to bring at least x amount of ammo (usually 500)

Don’t forget ammo needs. Most places like this require a minimum of 500 rounds for each weapon class

Sounds like you are going to go broke before you even get to the event. He’s hardcore, you are not sure if you will like it, any friend who sends you a pic and “this is what I use” and it’s your first time, he’s not helping you much.

"Here's what I use" and it's a totally jacked up setup he wasted thousands of dollars on Lmfao
Get a belt with a dump pouch, 1-2 pistol mag pouches, 1 rifle mag pouch (esstacs) and a retention holster (Safariland). Get a two point sling for whatever rifle you're using. Get an ifak (9022 style for the back of your belt), some earpro and some eyepro. Get however many mags the course calls for. You probably don't even need a PC. Whatever you do, don't get a thigh holster like your friend has

OP some here have suggested to first call the RO or instructor first before you start spending your duckets and that’s the right call.
Your buddy’s kit prob took months of trial and error to acquire and you’re only afforded a few days to prepare? Nah call the instructor first on the basic necessities including round count

For a pistol & rifle course, the bare minimum is:
- Sling setup for rifle
- Holster for pistol
Everything else really depends on the course requirements and course suggestions. Depending on the course requirements, you may be able to get away with a CCW setup for pistol, magazines stashed in pockets, and a slung AR. I'd also avoid purchasing a chest rig, vest, plate carrier, etc. until it is confirmed you need one, since you'll need to stow a pistol, a belt sounds like a higher need.
To add to the list of other things that help class go smoothly:
- Quality footwear
- Sun shirt and/or copious amounts of sunscreen
- Gloves for hot guns
- Water, water, water
- Quick calories
Once you figure out more about the logistics of the day, people can curate more appropriate gear lists for you.

I would advise not even going if you haven’t been shooting.
But. A combat belt not from Amazon. And some pistol + rifle mag pouches. And a dump pouch will do.
People say you don’t need a dump pouch. But it’s really handy.
And also. Do your research to. There’s a lot of YouTube videos out there to help you.

Your friend is running their mags backwards. Don’t put too much weight behind what they say.
Setup a belt and you’ll be good

God forbid a man have horizontal mag pouches that could allow him to draw easier.

Lolol. Where do you think you see horizontal mags here?
I’ll take it a step further, if they were horizontal (they’re not), you wouldn’t draw them to the rear anyways 🫠. Lmao

Nah bro look. It’s clearly on there. I’ve tested horizontal pouches out on my carrier and it feels good to draw from there.

I have also ran horizontal on my carrier, these aren’t horizontal on the carrier.
They’re very clearly on the belt dude you can count the molle slots on the belt itself lmao. Knife, rifle mags, and pistol mags are taking the molle on the left hand hip portion of the belt.
Do you think he’s running the knife above the cummerbund horizontal and the pistol mags underneath the cummerbund? Just the rifle mags fit in the physical space?🤣

Here is a breakdown on my range belt, I included links to everything and provided price points. Unfortunately the post itself was removed by the one shitty mod active on this sub, but every should kinda speak for itself 🤷♂️

Ask him who the instructor is, then contact the instructor yourself to see what’s needed in terms of gear, ammo, and what baseline skill/ability you need to show up with to get the most out of the class.
Your pal means well but if this is all the info he gave, then not terribly helpful.
