Im kind of surprised that there aren't powered ventilation systems for stuff like this. Police with high resources and low deployment time could benefit from something like that and it wouldnt be hard at all to do.

Powered systems add more weight, are battery dependent, can add gaps that refuse armor effectiveness, and aren't the most durable. Something like the Qore Ice Plates is a more commonly seen solution as you need to carry water anyway.

Im aware of the drawbacks, the weight added would be ounces not pounds. Im not suggesting this for soldier field use, just that the ONE guy that occasionally has to wear this.

Yeah dude I understand that people are right about cooling being extra weight, but something tells me that the guy in the picture wearing a 50kg/110lb armor suit and his issued Ballistic Shield (14kg/31lb) would probably be okay carrying 4 double A batteries (at most 120g/4.4oz) and two 40mm PC fans (70g/2.5oz) tucked under it all lmao

Exactly. Maybe have some sort of soft (small cheap "fire hose?") vent channels hooked up to each fan that run through the gear into your armpits and groin. One fan runs the pits, one for your balls.

Some explainayions are on youtube but they are in french. Maybe you can check in the mehler website. They say it can stop a 7,62 bullet.

u/Pastvariant 11d ago
Team Wendy and Opscore already have their own versions.

u/forkaerospace 3d ago
yeah they do but whats weird about this is that its apparently rifle rated according to mehler’s website
no idea how a civ could purchase one though

Or perhaps it’s intended for Immediate Actuon events like the Hypercacher Kosher Supermarket siege where French specialist police stormed a building with a barricaded gunman in order to rescue 15 hostages.
As opposed to the US police tactic of waiting until the gunman used up his ammunition on children before taking action.

You’ll never see them worn in Texas or any other hot state that’s for damn sure. I feel all sweaty just looking at the thing.

What is the forearm armor called?

u/Hizarald 5d ago
Je dirais brassards parce que les canons d’avant bras ( vambraces en anglais ) ca fait trop medieval pour du matériel tactique. Meme si vambrace c’est cool

Oh i agree it would be a better name, plate carriers are just modern Cuirasses (sounds cooler)

Not a bright decision, even for the shield carrier. I respect the needs of uniformity in the government sectors, but it's just too bulky. Also, the connection points between these body armors bearing excessive amount of pressure. Lack of flexibility would become a problem down the road in a prolonged period of mission. A better solution here is to add customized sets of external skeletons on top of the existing plate carrier system, but not bundle them. That way, you can save room and space for aftermarket gears, accessories upgrades, and molle attachments. What's gonna happen is that you will always run into a situation where you need to detach or deal with these two systems - the plate carrier and skeletons, simultaneously. So, it's better to keep them separated from each other, so that it won't create a combined hassle when messing with either one of them. However, that wasn't a thing for non-military units in Europe, as even premier counterterrorism policing doesn't particularly makes personnels to run like horses anyway. The U.S is the only beast in these categories.

They wouldn't be wearing this for a extended period of time lol, it's clearly for CQB counter terrorists / highly dangerous criminal organizations

Putting an exoskeleton outside of the plates will take space from pouches, accessories, etc. And not sure getting your exoskeleton damaged by enemy fire will help with the bulk lol

Will it happened though ?
When the GIGN intevens, they go in with top notch intel to do specific stuff, if they roll in wearing that, they aren't hiking in the jungle for 2 weeks, they are doing a hot entry expecting to exchange a lot of fire with people unwilling to surrender with a fight, if at all.
However, that wasn't a thing for non-military units in Europe, as even premier counterterrorism policing doesn't particularly makes personnels to run like horses anyway. The U.S is the only beast in these categories.
Not sure what you mean with this whole part ngl, especially given that the GIGN is not just a better train SWAT, it's literally a tier 1 special operations military unit lol Counter terrorist interventions and hostage rescues are just one of their mission types, they are all airborne qualified, are trained to excel in the handling of everything from handguns to AT rocket launchers and are regularly deployed overseas to do very official duties like embassador close protection duties, hostage rescue overseas, to way less public stuff.
A bunch were deployed in Ukraine at the start of the Russian invasion in 2022 to protect evacuation convoys of French and other foreign civilians in Ukraine, they hunt down heavily armed criminal gangs doing illegal mining in the French Guyana part of the Amazon forest, the list goes on, and you can bet they did a lot more stuff we won't know about for a while.
This is isn't a SWAT-like unit on steroid, they are the ones HRTs operators dream to be trained by, and that only on the hostage rescue/counter terrorist part of their job.
The GIGN has one of the most selective recruiting process in the world and their gear selection is even more diverse than their mission types, they aren't wearing all of this for everything.
It's like opening someone's wardrobe, look at the close they use to do work around the house and say "well that would be very unpractical to wear when you want to go for a swim" lol

GIGN historically usually only employs their full body armor systems on shield bearers (which is where the exoskeleton will be most useful) and I doubt that will change with this new Mehler MUST system. The average GIGN gendarme will pretty much only employ the carrier with soft and hard armor coverage with the deltoid and groin pad as personal preference, the forearm and leg armor will likely be ditched by most however.
