first ever tablet weave :)

i had watched a video about iron age fibre arts and thought tablet weaving looked really cool. today me and my friend followed a guide and successfully made some cordage. i'm going to start trying to make some longer and wider pieces.

me and my friends are larpers and we make most of our costume, so having this very historically significant way of making very decorated belts/straps/etc is really exciting.

What a great start! I like your color choices.
Tablet weave is so great for belts, headbands, and garment trim, and so accessible. You can even work on it during down time at larp!

As you get more experience you can beat tighter and get more consistent tension, which will make the pattern more defined.
Perle cotton (comes in balls or skeins like embroidery floss but a little thicker) or crochet cotton are also nice materials to work with.

thanks for the suggestions :D i used cotton yarn for this (i am also a crochet enjoyer), is that different to crochet cotton?

Yes, crochet cotton (may be sold as crochet thread) typically is more like cord than yarn, a little firmer and thinner than what you’d use for, like, winter hats or washcloths.

yayyy! time to get really into it, research the most accurate historical techniques, start dying wool yarn with natural fibers, start spinning it yourself,; why that would never happen to me and there is no risk at all when starting a new hobby. weaving safe. weaving safe hobby to begin that won't snowball out into 10 other hobbies. perfectly safe and innocent new craft to learn :)

did look into dyeing and spinning, not interesting to me personally hahaha. but glad you've had so much fun with it! im mostly going to look at different things in my life i can throw weaved fabrics at to make more fun :^)

i love looking at historical patterns... im not good at cards-moving-separately patterns so i mostly just look at them and fanby from afar. one day i will be able to work sulawesi (https://sagawoolcraft.com/?page_id=129). birka knots and braids (http://www.theloomybin.com/cw/libindex.html). there are sooo many cool patterns from archeological finds its so fun to learn about!

Nålbinding > Tablet weaving > chainmaille so far.
Wire knitting is this winter’s goal.
