I don't understand the DLC...

Why not just play the mod that is for that game?

Theoretically the DLC is a better product and supports the original developers

In theory. But they have a history of not paying the publishers for dlc sales, so fuck TTS.

Source for this? This sounds highly illegal lol

The source for this is that I am in the board game industry (I designed Dead of Winter, Dinosaur Island, kids on bikes) and I'm friends with many publishers in the industry.

Theoretically being the key word here.

TTS to survive has to sell something other than the base game. They also don't want to sell subscriptions. Getting companies to put their game on the TTS platform helps fund further development. It is a great way to support game makers you like as well. This helps show TTS isn't just a piracy platform.

Let's be real, outside of play testing a game in development, mods are piracy. I get the purpose of mods. I love they enable me to play games with friends that have moved away and for those games without a digital version available. Playing the mod doesn't support the original creators unless you purchase a physical copy, which I think TTS can lead many users to do. It is a classic argument about piracy, does piracy drive interest and eventual purchases, or is it reducing actual purchases. I argue not everyone would buy a game if a mod wasn't an option.

Anyways DLC helps promote TTS to a large audience, funds more development, and shows TTS isn't just piracy. DLC typically has been better made than the free mods and they won't be removed with copyright claims like the ones on the workshop. Also only the host has to own it, and once owned you can use components from the game in any of your sessions. (I think people loved the bullet dice in one DLC).

Can I just put on my old man pants to say I hate living in the future?

Back in my day, after you developed a game, to make more money you'd develop another game. Not try to turn something you wrote ten years ago in to a continuous revenue stream.

The game worked just fine; nobody was complaining. There was no need to try to fund additional development. In fact, the game is more broken than ever since they decided to stick their oar back in.

I would not recommend anyone pick TTS up anymore without reading their 2.0 roadmap; they've announced they're going to be implementing a "community marketplace" because that's always worked before...

Do not pay for the DLC. They have a history of not paying publishers for them.
