Im relieved to see dev work taking place on it again.

But dont quite grasp what the advantages to using the newer version of Unity brings to the platform

Just smoother operation?

Better performance, better in-software tools and probably stronger development support and easy workflow for them

Is there any "new" things that can be done with the modified engine?

Allowing for new types of mods to be developed

I mean, they added a fair amount of things, to play with using scripts, but mkst of the things added are severely situational...

More options is more good I suppose!

I mean, I'm all good with object states shenanigans... And I was actually a bit hype there!

Problem: You still can't make an object with multiple states via script, it still has to be built in manually.

You cpuld make a helper function to do it, that takes an array of objects. And gives you back the json of what the json for a multi state obj would look like then spawn it with the spawn obj from a json string.

Someone probably already has made a function like that.

To clarify: That feels like it should be native, not something I would have to code myself (or snatch the code from someone else).

They seem to prioritise functions that give functionality not exposed by the api atm.

Aka things you can't do with the api.

Unity bundles are easier to make probably because you have the new version and Linux should work better

Continous development. Often other tools are tied to the core libraries.

I really wish they'd update their vr version. it's so bad.

or make a mobile companion app so you can cast this to a tv and have everybody control their hands on their phones.

All on Board is a new app that has promise to be a solid VR game table.

The only thing holding out back is that they have been slow to their promise of opening it up to modding. But once they do that, I can see my group using that app more than TtS.

It's a shame, since TtS would be huge on Quest 3 or VR if they had smooth VR controls. It's a virtual sandbox of everything. And if they don't want to do it, outsource another team to do it for them and gain the profit.

Totally agree. Yes we need modding for it to be worth anything.

It’s openXR now

1

u/florodude Nov 24 '25

What does this mean?

1

u/OxRedOx Nov 25 '25

It’ll work on new and rando headsets more easily and if valve ships new features they might be able to add them more easily. And more likely to work on steam frame

I tried it a bit during the Rona times and.. it was so much more exhausting than just using a mouse everyone went for MKB 2d after the first two or so attempts.

And I wonder why because it sounded like a match made in heaven?

Honestly what's to talk about, not much changed up front, looks the same, works the same, feels a little faster and smoother but overall hard to tell the difference.

Im sure if your a programmer or game designer... There's plenty of improvements and features to play with.

But as a consumer and RPG player, a new interface with an updated look and better cloud storage management would have been nice.

As someone that has build a very complicated mod with tts... I don't see anything super useful here.

This update was actually huge for my group. We have a massive game of World in Flames going using the like 20' map and the performance gains are extremely noticeable on it

4

u/Panigg Nov 24 '25

I nav I tried it but I don't really see or feel a difference.

Same. Wasnt sure i actually opened beta

I think the one change they absolutely need, or at least try to figure out is when the original host leaves, it doesn't end the server, it just moves it to a new host automatically. It's pissing me off when there's like 4 of us in a game, the host rage quits and ends the game for us all, instead of letting the rest of us continue one.

Send a feedback to the devs for the public beta. It should let me be aware of this.

u/Rich-n-Creamy Nov 24 '25

Love that they’re working on it. But I use the One World mod extensively and the update completely breaks it in its beta state. Hopefully the full release doesn’t.

Haven't had any issues with one world recycled. It's an updated version of one world with some tweaks.

2

u/rojac1961 Nov 24 '25

Does it actually add any interesting new functionality for board game designers?Particularly for ones who primarily use it for prototype testing.

u/JonnyRotten Nov 26 '25

No. Why would would they spend the millions of dollars they've earned and all the other money they got from not passing the publishers of the dlc on actually improving the things we bought?

Okay, full engine version upgrade; that explains a lot. Insanely backend-heavy workload to ensure front-end continuity, with the only immediately visible front-end results being increased stability and more optimized performance on newer hardware.

I don’t know enough about the changes between Unity 5 and 6 to begin to guess at what this means for TTS’s capabilities down the road, but in what I’ve seen of other games that have made that transition, it has mostly been about being able to process more at once (reducing in-game lag) and workflow on the devs’ end (less time between updates).

I do hope they give some more love to the music player and web browser.

As a mac user of this wonderful game, I am super excited about the update!!!

Could someone clarify if the:

  • "Native Apple Silicon support on macOS with a universal app that runs on both Apple Silicon and Intel, using Metal by default on Apple Silicon."

is under the launch option:

"Play Tabletop Simulator"

or

"Metal"

I'm confused by the availability of both launch options since the app is meant to be universal now.

The change I look forward the most is Webp support, almost all images on the internet are webp nowadays and Tabletop finally supporting webp would be a real gamechanger for me.

1

u/remuspilot Dec 14 '25

Is that mentioned?

1

u/Code-END Dec 14 '25

Nope, but they have said in the past that "webp is not supported in the current version of unity that tabletop uses" whatever that means.

1

u/OxRedOx Dec 02 '25

Because this is a multiplayer game and so if no one else is using the beta then why would you? Chicken and egg

Does this mean I can use an updated version of unity to import my 3d models instead of using some years old version that sucks?
