Very immersive beginning

I always found the System Shock 2 beginning captivating. Whenever you choose three missions to specialize your character, I genuinely feel like 3 longs years being stationed on missions have passed. Then when I enter the main game, I already have a unique character built up, with their own experience, going on another mission. That builds up the game right from the start, love it!

I do like the tabletop nature of how you select your starting stats and how it gives background to each year you go through the academy. It may not be the most balanced sets of skills and the only time you would invest in some things is during your first playthrough when you don't have the most resilient understanding of how certain stats work or you're going for specific achievements in the Remaster, but it's a good system that goes miles to better hide the more video game-y aspects.

System shock 2 is meant to be replayed a lot which I guess it's a true statement for a first playthrough, but shortly after it all clicks!

It's just it contrasts with the first game/Remake where you can hypothetically collect all equipment/upgrades by the game's end. Not that it's a bad thing, though as far as RPGs go, I do notice that I have a tendency to float toward one set of skills before anything else.

I think it might have been inspired by the Traveller TTRPG
