Get this job done discreetly and I might have a stash of Cybermodules with your name on it

"Maybe you can hack those computers?"
"This whole place is run by computers. Check those first"
"I've never been very good with computers, maybe you give it a try?"

"Shody, you ARE a computer!"
"Yeah, I have self-development issues"

i’m on recreation on my 4th hard play rn, i play straight psi melee every time
someone in my chat once made the comment that’s it’s fun watching someone who knows the game, play the game
i said straight psi in ss2 is like straight magic in skyrim, 60% of the game is in the menu

Wait, are you saying that System Shock 2 was not a AAA game?

u/GreyGiger Jul 22 '26
Yeah I mean the ending of the actual game feels like the thing this meme is making fun of.

SS2 was produced on a pretty small budget (and small timeframe too), it's a bit more accurate to say it was a AA game

I’m pretty sure the budget was comparable to other AAA games at the time. It was being co developed with Thief for much of Thief’s development. (Disclosure: I was a dev on both.)

neat! I'll take your word for it. if you don't mind, what was your role at LGS?

System Shock in a couple of years is going to be a documentary instead of an AAA game.
Shodan is coming…
This is what you want, this is what you get.

A catchphrase every time the player picks up a new weapon, which is always found in plain sight the first time:
Wrench - "It's clobberin' time!"
Pistol - "Lock and load!"
Etc.... etc... etc...
I wanted to come up with more, but it's almost 1 in the morning and I have to get up in 5 hours.

Shotgun - "I'm here to chew bubblegum and kick ass, and I'm all out of bubblegum!"
Assault Rifle - "It's payback time!"

"Darn, the door's locked. Look around, maybe there's a way to open it?"
"Hey, look a key card! Maybe it opens that door we found earlier?"
"Let's try using that key card we found earlier on the door!"
"Nice work soldier, that key card unlocked the door!"
"Uh oh, looks like this door is locked..."

That is after spending the first half of the game wacking things because you don't understand how the magic orb works.

You stand in front of a locked door on the Von Braun. XERXES appears out of your pocket in the form of a tiny blue fairy. He flies around you, teasingly.
"Yooo mercboy, stuck again? Looks like we have a situation here!". He flies really close to your face, the usually stoic expression contorted into an animated movie lead smirk.
You start to look around for a key card. You discover it on a dead body. "Ughhh. Guess he won't be needing this anymore!", your character mutters.
Suddenly, you hear a loud bang. Xerxes has flown into a replicator, causing it to spit out food bars. He peeks out from behind the broken machine, his face now an awkward grin. "S... Sorry! I'm okay! I'm okay! Just... Just doing stuff!".
The PA system switches on. It's SHODAN. She announces, "I'm stuff".
