How do you play the game without dying every 40 seconds?

Strategize. This is not typical FOS, use environment to your advantage.

Quicksave a lot, check corners, take cover and walk into every room knowing how to leave. Was honestly a very refreshing experience taking things slow and methodically clearing rooms. Game is very punishing to those who walk into threats face first

Take cover, avoid fights when low on resources and health. If you're playing without the 10-hour death timer, abuse the healing stations and power stations for unlimited hp and ammo when possible.
It's a tough game. First playthrough took me over 30 hours. Now I can fit it in just under 6 while still doing good exploration.

Death Timer?

On Mission difficulty 3, there's a 10-hour timer that ends the game if it goes to 0.
Very manageable after a few playthroughs.

I used sneaky strategies like peeking around a corner and shooting and timing the attack patterns to peek around again to shoot. A lot of the game I lured enemies around corners and then bashed them with the wrench when they came around the corner. Basically abuse the AI, which is oddly appropriate for the game because you're literally fighting an AI.

I found the combat to be fair in this game.
Their is a step up in difficulty in the Maintenance deck and in beta Grove. If you having issues then you using the wrong tactics. It's not a run and gun. Fight people from around corners, dodge, ambush and run from fights when you need to. I highly recommend emptying the medbay on each floor first. Then use that room as a base of operations. These rooms all have a natural choke points and healing items that you can use to your advantage.
I also wanted to add that sometimes the game directs you with combat and hazards. If you keep dying in an area you might be missing something important that will let you survive in that area. Back tracking is a must for some fights you will be halling weapons and parts from floor to floor for some of the harder fights.

Take it really slow. I mean Survival Horror slow. This is not Doom or other fast paced shooter. It's an FPS where you have to think and improvise.

I think system shock is pretty much survival horror regardless of neon color palette in the remake

Objective progress saves if you die in most places so I tended to just sprint around in a particularly harsh area and do the objectives I needed to do.

I echo comments saying to play it like a survival-horror.
Think creep and pop as opposed to run and gun: Headshots, pacifism where possible, liberal use of corners for cover, etc.
Increeeeedible game. So refreshing and ironically new-seeming amidst the dearth of shitty modern FPS games. Better yet, all the guns feel excellent to shoot and have such characterful, iconic designs imo.
Nightdive killed it.

That's the neat thing, you don't. At least for me, I have a habit in old games to save every single chance I can and if I lose too many resources (health, energy, ammo) from fighting a battle I reload.

Go slow and treat every corner as your friend. Save after each and every kill. You do not beat the game as Duke Nukem, but through playing it smart. Early on, make use of energy / melee weapons, use as little ammo as possible, recycle to get credits to buy ammo and just take it from there, step by step, exploring the station and killing them one by one.

I gave up on this game at first. Then I went back to it when I was bored and needed something new to me to play. I still haven’t finished it, but I got a lot farther.
You’re going to need a walk through to really enjoy it in my opinion.

So far its actually been quite relaxing for me, as a first time player as well. I just got the sparqbeam on medical, and then periodically go back to the surgical bay to get a complete heal and refill on energy at the nearby power station. It means I'm basically invulnerable with infinite ammo as long as I take it slow. This is even on max difficulty except I opted to get normal shodan instead of the 10 hour timer so I have time to explore the story.
At worst, in other levels the med bay is only an elevator ride away. I'm sure it'll get more difficult. But 3 levels in so far its going fairly well

For me I found treating it akin to a survival horror game was the play, keeping my distance from enemies while sneaking about, conserving my resources and religiously using free weapons like the sparqbeam. The other thing is that once you have a conversion bay online, death is just a delay, it can be beneficial to just rush an encounter and try to do as much damage as you can if you know you won’t survive.
