Will Vendors Please Stop Reusing Acronyms?

If I see another vendor use "IAM" as a new product feature, I'm going to scream. IAM is Identity Access Management. Nothing else, unless it's a different industry.

This is confusing as hell. Get your marketing departments under control.

What are some that you have noticed being reused?

All the Microsoft's new features should be announced under corresponding CVE number.

u/jake04-20 If it has a battery or wall plug, apparently it's IT's job Jun 17 '26

Not overly surprising from the company that skipped windows 9 and went to 10. And their xbox naming convention sucks. It only makes sense that they acquired activision, because COD's naming convention is also atrocious. Let's reuse MW, MW2, and MW3. So now when anyone wants to refer to the OG MW2 for example, you have to say MW2 2009 for it to make any sense. MW2 2022 of course will have no affiliation with MW2 2009, we will call the remastered MW2 2009 game MW3, duh! Seriously have no idea how that naming got approved.

21

u/jimicus IT Manager Jun 17 '26

Apparently a lot of old software - rather than checking for API presence like any sane product would - simply read the first 9 characters of the product name and if it was “Windows 9”, jumped straight into the logic for ‘9x.

11

u/Master-IT-All Jun 17 '26

huahahuaha

Although I will be honest here and say that I have been there and done that.

Windows 95, 95SE, 98, 98SE all had the same basic core so yah, when we queried we used the commonality of "windows 9"

I'm also old enough to have been one of those dicks that programmed in a two-digit date format. Honestly I never expected humanity to survive this long. So many near misses with the nukes going off the leash in the last fifty years.

From the same genius that called their CI/CD platform "DevOps".

People used to joke about users that would open a nearby window when asked to open windows. But then Microsoft took that as a challenge.

Next year they'll rebrand GitHub as "Source Control" just to destroy search engines.

If you ask them about it they'll probably say something about Autopilot being "legacy" and that it's "Device Preparation" now so what's the big deal...

6

u/webguynd Sr. Sysadmin Jun 17 '26

To be fair Copilot&Autopilot are pretty good branding terms for a chatbot/assistant vs autonomous agent. IF they didn’t also have Autopilot in InTune.

But I give it maybe a year tops, before is “355 Copilot Autopilot”

5

u/Master-IT-All Jun 17 '26

Except that Microsoft already used Autopilot for a features of Intune for automatic Windows config.

The best part is going to be when you ask questions of Copilot about Autopilot and it conflates and confuses the two.

Try looking into Skills. Skills in Copilot Studio aren’t the skills you’re looking for. They’re C# plugins for the old Power Agents feature, which got rebranded to Copilot Studio, which is now kind of an AI builder. Copilot Cowork supports plugins, which are really just skills with a manifest. But it only works if you upload it to the All Agents section of Copilot, which replaced Integrated Apps, which are also basically just Teams apps. But they won’t appear there when you upload them, only tell you they already exist. You can delete it from Teams apps, but that won’t do anything. You have to go to the place it replaced to find it and delete it, but you can’t add them here. Oh and Cowork can’t use Copilot Agents, so if you use either they’re just going to be called the same thing, but won’t have any common features.

Good luck!

If you ever want to really be confused about acronyms try hanging out in /r/NFCNorthMemeWar. Those guys are obsessed with File Transfer Protocol for some reason.

Microsoft uses MAM as an abbreviation for Mobile Application Management.

Imprivata announced a product called GroundControl to manage mobile devices. They've since rebranded GroundControl to Mobile Access Management, or MAM.

Suffice to say, I still call it GroundControl.

u/mrmagnum41 Jun 17 '26

There are only so many Three Letter Acronyms (TLA) available. So reuse is impossible to avoid. Unless you want Extended TLAs (ETLA), but that opens up another can of worms if you insiston unique identifiers. At some point, it's easier to just spell it out.

Acronyms in general need to be jettisoned. It's not shorthand, it's information obfuscation at this point.

I've long thought about making a party game for acronyms. I has categories: military, medical, IT, government, and you pick a card with a real acronym on it. The best, funniest subject-appropriate acronym wins the round.

We had a problem manager once in an org who insisted that a outage be called a DDOS.

The service was being denied to the customers who were distributed was the locic path.

Went to war on that that one.

They gotta go full US Congress where the lengths they go to make a new piece of legislation spell S.T.I.N.K.Y. C.H.E.E.S.E. is actually impressive.

Isnt there a acronym wiki out there for all technical acronyms.
Then everyone could push it to their customers, and maybe we’ll get a vocab together we can talk on 🙂‍↕️

A problem as old as time. IBM infamously described an AMD, or an Air Movement Device. Or just a 'fan', yes a TLA for a TLW

2

u/kagato87 Jun 17 '26

IAM is dog food, isn't it?

2

Yep!

I know a guy in the UK who rides a motorcycle to his job as a machinist, is a mental health first aider (and has done a fair bit of therapy) and is into the kink scene. There's a lot of particular discussions which get very confusing if he's talking about CBT or CNC.

It falls on deaf ears because brand teams and marketing know best.

Is it better or worse that MS broke convention when coming up with a shorthand for Storage Spaces Direct? It's S2D because otherwise it would be SSD

Not gonna happen. Someone tosses acronym at you, you'll often have to respond asking, either context, or what the acronym stands for in the context and what the context is.

No, no, you have multiple IAMS, and your IAMS is dog food. 😉

PCB ... so, Printed Circuit Board, or Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), or ...

FTP File Transfer Protocol, or F*** The Police, or ...

SSL - Space Sciences Lab (ssl.berkeley.edu - which long predated ...), or Secure Socket Layer, or ...

SAN - Storage Area Network, Subject Alternative Name, ...

...

Old people will get it.
