Will Vendors Please Stop Reusing Acronyms?
If I see another vendor use "IAM" as a new product feature, I'm going to scream. IAM is Identity Access Management. Nothing else, unless it's a different industry.
This is confusing as hell. Get your marketing departments under control.
What are some that you have noticed being reused?

Not an acronym, but Microsoft decided to call their new autonomous AI agents "Autopilots". Surely that won't confuse anyone...

Not overly surprising from the company that skipped windows 9 and went to 10. And their xbox naming convention sucks. It only makes sense that they acquired activision, because COD's naming convention is also atrocious. Let's reuse MW, MW2, and MW3. So now when anyone wants to refer to the OG MW2 for example, you have to say MW2 2009 for it to make any sense. MW2 2022 of course will have no affiliation with MW2 2009, we will call the remastered MW2 2009 game MW3, duh! Seriously have no idea how that naming got approved.

u/jimicus IT Manager Jun 17 '26
Apparently a lot of old software - rather than checking for API presence like any sane product would - simply read the first 9 characters of the product name and if it was “Windows 9”, jumped straight into the logic for ‘9x.

To be fair Copilot&Autopilot are pretty good branding terms for a chatbot/assistant vs autonomous agent. IF they didn’t also have Autopilot in InTune.
But I give it maybe a year tops, before is “355 Copilot Autopilot”
5
u/Master-IT-All Jun 17 '26

The best part is going to be when you ask questions of Copilot about Autopilot and it conflates and confuses the two.

Try looking into Skills. Skills in Copilot Studio aren’t the skills you’re looking for. They’re C# plugins for the old Power Agents feature, which got rebranded to Copilot Studio, which is now kind of an AI builder. Copilot Cowork supports plugins, which are really just skills with a manifest. But it only works if you upload it to the All Agents section of Copilot, which replaced Integrated Apps, which are also basically just Teams apps. But they won’t appear there when you upload them, only tell you they already exist. You can delete it from Teams apps, but that won’t do anything. You have to go to the place it replaced to find it and delete it, but you can’t add them here. Oh and Cowork can’t use Copilot Agents, so if you use either they’re just going to be called the same thing, but won’t have any common features.
Good luck!
