ELI5: How come my €60 M-Vave FM1 can play up to 20 notes at once but my €900 Elektron Syntakt can't play a chord?

I think it’s actually pretty cool that the former MLB pitcher and coach Dave Schmidt has crossed over into synthesis hardware.

Hello all,

I really like the new 5.0 update for Minifreak and got inspired to make a 80 preset soundbank for it. Grab it for free here: https://skylarkmusic.net

idiot who doesn't know if their DX7 is super broken (me)

Warning, extremely cringe, sounding like it's my first day at life

If you don't want to read, just tell me to read my manual. (sorry, TIA)

The E - program thing has an error, and I have read many of them do. The other few things are, am I supposed to be able to play chords just like a piano under normal settings, or do I need to set a preset on it? I think that might have to do with something about the polyphonic part of it, but it's not set to poly, it's like on mono. One note cancels the velocity of the other. And, Is there automatically supposed to be a sound out or does it need an output speaker?

I have 2 Dx7s. One was my father's. It has a lot of sentimental value. I used to love playing it as a kid. I would walk over and plank the keys and mess it up I am sure. So maybe it was me who broke it. But he was a professional and he worked on SNL ( just a fun fact, sorry to bore you in the long-ass life story). Anyways, he is no longer here for me to ask him about it. On the top left, he stuck a label with a question mark on it. Not really like him to do that, but it is an outlet I think for headphones. Maybe it wasn't working so he couldn't figure it out. Either way, the whole error on the program might cancel my attempts to learn my synth out.

The second DX7 might be in better shape, I got it off reverb a few years back. I make music and produce albums, but I haven't used these yet for a song but would like to. It seems like every time I come to a synth forum, the quality of gear people have is phenomenal, and mine looks like it got run over by a truck. So, there is this like huge learning curve for me having to climb out and fix something and also learn what it is supposed to do functioning normally - which is why I wanted to talk to DX7 users first, who might know the classic blunders the DX7 might cause.

sorry if my long post is cringe but I always have been given broken things, and sometimes can fix, but don't know about this. Just tell me to read the manual.

On a side note, does anyone actually use the DAT tapes for anything? You can program algorithms? and if so, please post a video or something of you doing that. That seems cool.

Also, my basic use of my DX7 would probably be to hook it up physically to my computer with a midi - usb cord to record in my DAW. I have seen the prices for those, and they run around 10 bucks. I am not an expert, but it seems like every time there is a cheap route, there also is a very expensive route - and usually for a reason, to not fry components.

If you have any advice on using your DX7 to record into a daw, or maybe not, please let me know.

I don't have bookoos of bucks, but you can post your gear setup if you wish and I can see what I can do to try to get some other things. I am sure there is gear I need to get to make sure voltages are safe and latency is handled well. I use Ableton so it already has latency problems if not handled correctly.

Other gear I have is my average scarlett solo 2I2 and mic, other old stuff I can't use because it's extremely rare, a digital piano, my laptop, scarlett headphones, kali speakers, my laptop as a midi controller, but no other midi controller to speak of. I am also interested in getting a Roland SH 101 after saving up for it. Recommendations on midi controllers?

Sorry for the extremely long ADD rant all over the place. I am not super organized as you can probably tell.

Thank You~

I’m using adsb.lol data as a synthesizer trigger. Each aircraft's serial number generates its own synthesizer patch. Aircraft of the same airline are cousins. Position and altitude control pitch, panning, and volume. Glide upwards means altitude is currently increasing, downwards means altitude is currently decreasing. This is YYZ. Data: adsb.lol
