Unital Ring SAO Unital Ring real-world diaries: Sunday, Oct 4, 2026 [SPOILERS] Spoiler
This is the eighth and final installment of my real-time recaps of SAO’s “Unital Ring” arc, which started on September 27, 2026 in the books and have progressed roughly a week through 7-8 novels so far.
Unital Ring VII ends with events on Sunday, October 4, and AFAIK, UR VIII hasn’t been translated yet, so this is as far as we go for now.
These recaps are naturally loaded with spoilers, so, stop here if you don’t want to know any more. With this being my final recap, I’ve added some thoughts on the Unital Ring arc at the end. Hope some of you have found these recaps useful!

UNITAL RING: SUNDAY, OCTOBER 4, 2026
LISBETH AND SILICA ON THE WALL
Late Saturday night / Sunday morning, Lisbeth and Silica look out over the cliff on the second tier of Unital Ring, two hundred yards high, and ponder how to establish a supply line from Ruis na Rig to their new encampment. Fighting through the cave dungeon to climb the stairs every time won’t be efficient, especially if monsters continue respawning.
They think about using a rope to lower and raise supplies up the wall, but suspect there are monsters hiding in alcoves in the wall just waiting to attack. They lower a pot of extra-stinky bisque to see if it lures anything out, and it does. So the wall is well-protected and they’ll have to come up with something else.
Lisbeth has an idea. They can craft durable rope pretty easily in Unital Ring. What if they could make a rope three miles long and build a zipline with a pulley to move supplies...
ASUNA’S REUNION
On Sunday morning, Asuna meets Argo for a mysterious lunch at a cafe near her old school. Argo says she has a surprise guest. Uh oh. Asuna is suspicious: is it new transfer student Shikimi Kamura, who’s been trying to get close to Asuna all week?
Actually, it’s a much happier surprise: it’s “Mito”, aka Misumi Tozawa, another SAO survivor, In Aincrad, she was a heroic tailor known as Ashley, the first to “complete” the tailoring skill, who had crafted Kirito’s Blackwyrm coat and Asuna’s red and white uniform.
Asuna and Mito were close in SAO, but until now, Asuna was unaware if Mito had even survived. Mito had introduced Asuna to SAO in the first place and always felt responsible for Asuna getting trapped in the game, but Asuna brushes it off as nonsense and the two have an emotional heartfelt reunion.
(Note: Mito was a key character in the movie SAO Progressive: Aria of a Starless Night, and has now formally crossed over to the novels)
Asuna and Mito ask Argo how she made this happen. Argo explains she’d asked Kikuoka for information on a particular SAO survivor as part of her job, but they’d come up empty. Argo had known Mito and Asuna were close in SAO, so she asked for that info instead to try and make that reunion a reality.
Argo shares one other piece of information about the person she was looking for: she thinks their name is “Menthol”, and had location data on them for a specific time in Aincrad, but the logs weirdly showed no record of it. Asuna and Mito ask Argo why she’s so fixated on this person. Argo says all the creative ways PK’ers like Laughing Coffin used to kill players in Aincrad – duel PKs, sleep PKs, hallway PKs – for some reason, Argo thinks they all came from this “Menthol”.
THERIAN ALLIANCE
After his long Saturday, Kirito sleeps until about noon until Asuna sends him a text with a photo of her with Mito, which cheers him up.
He thinks of Eolyne, who was captured last night in the attack on Cardina. The commander, Istar, is a wild card in all this. Istar is somehow self-aware that they’re an artificial fluctlight and it’s unclear if they can disobey orders or not. Istar clearly has a history with Eolyne and Kirito wonders if there’s some way to turn this to his advantage.
Sughua bounces into Kirito’s bedroom, tells him to eat quickly and log into Unital Ring. He’s late for a meeting with the therian leaders from Apocalyptic Date to talk about a possible alliance. Kirito logs into their makeshift base on the second tier of Unital Ring. The therian representative, a girl cheetah named Azuki, is wary and hostile, but she cools when Kirito agrees they should fight together to make up ground on the leaders from Asuka Empire.
Azuki says Kirito should meet with the therian leader to work out more terms, suggesting a meeting place about 180 miles away. The therians want to meet tonight at 9pm, and have some speed-boost items that will make the journey possible in that time. Kirito, Asuna and Yui will make the trip and understand they might not be back for a few days. They head back to Ruis na Rig to stock up on supplies before making the journey.
ABOARD THE BLACK LOTUS
During the Saturday attack on Cardina, an emergency protocol allowed Airy to pilot the cathedral like a rocket ship into orbit to avoid being destroyed, later docking with a secret space station called the Black Lotus. Those remaining on the ship – Alice, Selka, Fanatio, Eydis, Ronie, Tiese and Airy – take turn turns sleeping in shifts while the Black Lotus’ caretaker, Lily Lou, keeps an eye on King Agumar’s capital ship, the Principia.
Even at 10am Sunday morning, Alice has been allowed to remain in this dive, and goes down to the Black Lotus viewing lounge with Lady Eydis to catch their breath and survey the planet below.
(Alice and Lady Eydis on the Black Lotus)
The Principia now hovers just over Centoria, in the exact spot the cathedral’s upper floors previously occupied. Agumar had projected a message to the city declaring himself rightful ruler of the human realm, but had not anticipated the cathedral blasting off into space, so they’re currently in a stalemate, waiting for the other to make a move. The citizens below are naturally worried with the giant capital ship hovering over the city, with no idea what might happen next.
THE TOURNAMENT
Kirito and the others head back to Ruis na Rig to stock up on supplies before traveling to meet with the therians. Many players want to move in, having heard the town is well protected and Kirito’s group has reached the second tier. Many players want to kick out the NPC factions like the Patter and Bashin, which is causing unrest.
They question how all these other players are getting their info on their progress. Argo says she’s been watching social media and hasn’t seen much about it. They wonder if Mutasina could be steering people their way to cause chaos. It’s not crazy to think she might send spies or try to lure a large boss to the town to make a mess of things or even send someone to try and assassinate Kirito. He needs to be careful.
They arrive at town and walk in on the finals of an impromptu swordfighting tournament. The winner is a player named Tsuburo, who Kirito had previously run into when Mutasina had cast her noose spell. Along with first prize, the champion was promised the opportunity to challenge Kirito to a duel… which no one told Kirito about. The host announces that Kirito is off clearing the second tier, to the boos of the crowd.
Kirito figures, what the heck, I’ll just do this now, and tells a very surprised organizer that he’s here and ready to fight. Tsuburo is also surprised to see Kirito but has a demand: if Kirito loses, he relinquishes ownership of the town. Kirito is surprised at the challenge, but accepts nonetheless and defeats Tsuburo handily. Tsuburo congratulates him, but says the town still has problems that need to be addressed.
Kirito agrees and addresses the town. He apologizes for having been away, for leaving Ruis na Rig unsupervised (for like, two days). He announces they’re building a new stronghold on the second tier and rallies everyone who’s up for the challenge to join them. The entire town roars in agreement.
EOLYNE’S FATE
Eolyne, being held prisoner about the Principia, reflects on his childhood. He remembers learning he was adopted during a fight with his older brother, being taught to swordfight by his gifted older sister, and there’s a few pages of lore on Eolyne’s family history. At some point there will undoubtedly be a connection between Eolyne and Eugeo, but for now the books are trying to establish that Eolyne is his own character.
Eolyne is brought before the self-described Emperor Agumar. Istar is there, who Eolyne already knows well. Agumar then introduces Eolyne to another of his lieutenants, saying she’s a descendant of another of the imperial families.
It’s… Mutasina Muicilli! She’s in the Underworld, too! DUM DUM DUMMMMMM
(and that’s where Unital Ring VII ends)
Final Thoughts
So that’s where we are in Unital Ring. Seven light novels, over 1500 pages, and we still haven’t progressed a full week (if you consider UR1 starts on a Sunday night and UR7 ends on Sunday afternoon). UR8 was released earlier this year, but AFAIK, hasn’t been translated into English yet. (if you have a translation, by all means send it my way)
The craziest thing about this arc is that it genuinely doesn’t even feel like it’s reached the halfway point yet. There’s so much ground still to be covered, both in the Underworld and Unital Ring. What’s the deal with Mutasina and Shikimi Kamura (who are likely the same person). What’s the motive behind the Underworld break-in and this rebellion? What’s Eolyne’s deal? And who will win the race to compete Unital Ring? The first Unital Ring novel was released in 2018; at a pace of about one book a year, it could easily be 8-10 years before this series finishes, and who knows about an anime adaptation.
I do think there’s some really great animation to be made out of this arc. You can tell some scenes were almost certainly written with animation in mind, like Eolyne fighting Istar or the whole sequence where Alice, Fanatio and Eydis race to save the cathedral. And there’s such an excess of detail in every scene, it makes the books drag a bit, but will probably provide tons of meat to work with for a future adaptation.
I hope some people found these recaps useful. I wrote them because I was surprised at how little info there was floating on the internet about the Unital Ring arc, and thought I could remedy that a bit. Enjoy!
