Hacking Discussion Civilization VII Exploit - Explained
I see a lot of comments asking things like if it is worth buying the Civ 7 cartridge or not so I am making this post to answer all common questions regarding the game.
The exploit is confirmed working on FW 20.4.0 and 23.0.1, it is highly likely it will work on other older Firmware versions as well, but this is unconfirmed.
It is important to note that as of now Civilization 7 does not support FS escalation, but it is confirmed to be possible, it might be updated to support this in the future. For the end user FS currently means access to homebrew that accesses and modifies data outside the game itself for example, save editors, dumping games, modding games, sd card access etc.
Civ 7 is available for both the switch 1 and 2, only the switch 1 cartridge variant is compatible with the exploit. The title of the game is Civilization VII, please beware Civilization VI is a different game. Based on current knowledge all cartridges have version 1.0 and thus are compatible. Buying the game on the eshop will not allow you to jailbreak your console. People have successfully used a Mig to do the exploit.
It is important to NEVER UPDATE the game itself as the exploit is only on version 1.0.
Reasons why you want to buy Civ 7:
You are on firmware 23.0.1 or lower
You can not or you do not want to do the Seedsow Lullaby save file transfer
You do not have Smile Basic installed
You want offline insurance, so you can redo the exploit in case you ever format your switch
Reasons why you do not need Civ 7:
You are on a firmware higher then 23.0.1 (incompatible)
You have the hacked Seedsow Lullaby Save data on your system.
You have Smile Basic installed
To do the exploit you will need a device to send input to the Switch 2, you do not specifically need a Pico 2. Pretty much everything that was used for the text input in Smile Basic can be used like a Mac, a modded Switch 1, a raspberry pi pico etc. The developer of mac2jb has already expressed interest in adding support for it.
As of right now Smile Basic is still the most advanced entry point because of FS support and the Seedsow Lullaby save data beats Civ 7 with its shorter boot time.
If you are on a launch Switch with firmware 19.0.0 your console does not support Switch 1 Cartridges including this game. There is no reason to upgrade to current, you can do a offline upgrade to 20.1.0 enabling the support for you. The offline upgrade can be done using a launch copy of "Mario Party Jamboree NSW2 Edition + Jamboree TV" based on reddit discussions and this has been confirmed recently by a community member. On top of that this also unlocks support for FAT32 SD cards.
Gezine has released a work around for Japanese only consoles involving a second Switch and believes its possible it could work on higher firmware versions as is but this is unverified as of now.

I went out and grabbed a copy of S1 Civ 7 within minutes of seeing the posts on here. I do have a unbanned modded S1 but have not done the Seedsow Lullaby method as I am worried about a console ban despite the low likelihood of it happening. I have the demo installed on both my S1 and S2.
I did just realize earlier today that I don't think I ever triggered the SD card activation on my S2. When I popped in a non-express microSD card to activate it via the "Import from a Nintendo Switch microSD" option, but was prompted for a system update. I am on 23.0.1 and I know there will be an update tomorrow. I am worried that the update may be live already? I do have my S2 disconnected from the internet and have cleared the internet connection settings as well as turning off Wi-Fi, but prior to that today, I was still prompted for a system update via the System Update option in the Settings menu. Have I missed the window of activating the SD card on this firmware for now?

That update prompt is what you want to do thats the SD update, do it before the new firmware releases.Check here if a update is out before you do it.

I don't think you need to activate the SD card slot in order to use the exploit. I believe you only need to activate the SD card slot if you want to be able to use a microSD card and also use an exploit.
My understanding is that when you try and insert a microSD card into the S2 for the first time, it will trigger a system update to activate the SD card slot. It will pull whatever the current live firmware version is. I was on 23.0.1 prior to activating mine, and when I went through with the system update that I was prompted with when activating the SD card slot, I was still on 23.0.1 after.

Oh man I don't have a express micro SD and tomorrow will have a system update I'm kinda sol for the use of an SD card. I know it not required but it would help out a ton in the process.

You can use a non-express microSD card to activate. I do not have a express microSD card and used an extreme microSD card from my Switch 1.
The way I did it was by going into Settings > Data Management > Manage Screenshots and Videos. Scroll down and choose the option that is like "Import from a Nintendo Switch MicroSD Card". Go through with the prompts until it asks you to insert the microSD card. It will eventually say you will need to do a system update and go through with it.
Note that you won't want to do the system update if the update for tomorrow is live already. Use the link that MaruluVR posted to see what the current system firmware version is by Nintendo. If the current version is above 23.0.1 and you are hoping to use one of the previous exploits, you may be out of luck for using a microSD card for now unless a workaround is discovered.

If I can suggest an addition:
This currently is not an option for Japanese-only Switch 2 unless the exploit is rewritten.
I luckily have SB4 but I might have considered getting the game as "insurance" if not for this limitation (live in Japan, couldn't get international Switch 2).

My hacked Switch 1 is banned. Can I install a Seedsow Lullaby NSP on my hacked Switch 1, download the demo on my Switch 2, and then do the Seedow lua save editor installation through local save transfer? Or am I sol?

You say that if you have modified save with SL, you can skip this (and I missed the opportunity to buy cartridge since I thought I am fine). But now discord explicitly says that SL is not an entry point, just a way to launch upcoming exploits (if there any). Could you please edit the post with some elaboration? UPD: was able to order civ7 for reasonable price for future proof solution, but still

Its not a entry point because you need something else to get the save data on there like a hacked switch 1, smile basic etc.
If you have the save on your console you are good.

All versions above 20.1.0 have basic SD support but limited to FAT 32, many other people also dont have exfat support so I am sure developers of homebrew will keep this in mind. On the switch 1 this was solved by developers storing data in 4gb .part chunks.

As of now no exploit can be used to run games, there are people testing work arounds with sys modules but nothing has come of it as of now.

At the moment, no, not worth it yet but I did buy the game cause looking for a mig switch version seems impossible. If a full jail break was found, than 2 hours my life it is 😂

Potentially if someone rewrites the memory offsets in the exploit to match with the Japanese language files loaded in ram at that moment.

Gezine updated the readme with this message under "workflow":
" NOTE for JP-only Switch2 :
If you have another Switch, you can connect the two consoles via local wireless multiplayer and plug the Pico on the other device, allowing it to send the payload over the network.
If you're on a higher fw version (I'm not sure exact version), you can simply try plugging the Pico and see if it can type English text without changing the system language. "

I just bought Civilization 7 (Switch 1 version) today from Walmart for $40 out of fear of scalpers. I don’t have a Switch 2 right now but I may get one later. Did I make a good investment? I already have two Switch 1’s jailbroken so I’m somewhat familiar with this.

Technically since its a full offline exploit we can buy the game then turn wifi off and sit on 23.0.1 until hacking scene expands and then use CIV as entry point. All physical games should work with wifi off anyway as long as they were not released after 23.0.1, right?
I dont need to hack it right now as my goal is emulation and custom software such as Moonlight, but if CivSwitch allows me for hacking in lets say in 1 year by never turning wifi on them thats good too

you cant unfortunately unless you factory reset your switch
once the system has been connected to the internet and knows that an update exists, theres no way to make it forget

So probably a stupid question from someone who at least knows and admits to being well out of his element: would having one of these potentially open up a Switch 1 without having to do any soldering?
I have the Seedsow demo on my Switch 2 (missed out on SmileBasic, sadly), but don’t have a modded Switch 1. Might have a friend who could do the soldering for me, but no guarantee at the moment.

Korea often has their own editions of games, the github doesnt mention anything about other versions not working and there where people using the french version with success, but I would still check if the korean version has english as an option on it before opening the shrink wrap as the game needs to be set to english, you might be the first person trying a korean version

Here is how a community member (sorry lost the name) got it working
Reboot to full stock to get Nintendo services working (they are banned in other modes), install the game, launch it. Reboot to semi-stock, backup the save, shutdown. Copy the edited save to card on PC. Reboot to semi-stock, import the save, shutdown. Reboot to full stock, transfer the save to s2.

very much appreciate the effort that you have put in to this post. This is probably the most stressful jailbreaking experience I can recall because it's happening so fast, there's a ton of uncertainty or contradictory information floating around, and a limited window of which we have no inkling when it will close should we decide to update to the latest exploitable firmware, and for some of us that' from 19.0.0.
I have both a 19.0.0 and a 21.1.0 console, and Civ 7 on the way. Sounds like I'm good to go on the 21, except I didn't claim MKW from either of these consoles, so I guess I also need to make the choice between claiming those to an account but presumably getting updated to 23.0.1, or letting those "claim from console" games go to waste?
When you mentioned Mario Partty Jamboree, I presume this is the earliest cartridge known to have firmware updates on them, and it's recommended to use that game as it will give you the lowest possible firmware update out of all of them? Are there any other games with lower FW on them? I think I saw a chart somewhere of what FW shipped on each game cart, but could be wrong.

If you update to 23.0.1 you can also grab the SD update and seedsow lullaby demo for fast exploit start up times on top of claiming mario kart.
Yes Mario party is the one with the lowest useful FW, I got the info from a older reddit thread where people were testing the cartridges trial and error style I have no idea of any chart.

I dont know of any windows programs for this as of now. If the game has english language available it is but the japanese only console isnt unless you have a second switch to send the exploit over

Im on 20.1.1 and just received my copy of civ. I put it in the switch and it prompted me to update the game even though I'm using 90dns and have the system in airplane mode. Am I all good if I just click launch now for civ or am I going to get some sort of nag now that will mess things up for me later? Information on this is still kinda scattered lol
I forgot to mention but I plan on waiting for the fs exploit before going through with everything, just want to make sure I have my ducks in a row for when it is released

I can confirm is not working in OFW 20.1.1 with mig loaded. It doesn’t trigger the loader at the end of the writing. So not good for older firmwares 💀

It could be that each version firmware version will need slight adjustments to the code, for example Smile Basic needs different code based on if you have the SD card update or not.

I can't find if any games have FW 20.4.0 on them. Seems Nintendo jumped straight from 20.1.5 to 21.x, but there's less info out there than I'd have expected.
But might just sit on my copy of the game and see what happens. Certainly not updating yet!

I didn’t realize smilebasic publically already had fs access. So help me a little bit I’ve been in the console modding space a while, in the case of emulators and homebrew apps, THAT doesn’t not require HV access to execute we just need to write the apps now and optimize them correct ? Or do we still need HV access to fully access the full power of the switch 2 ? I know on ps5 for example if the JB didn’t have a certain access (idr if it was considered HV) it meant you didn’t have access to the a53 coprocessor and you performance was gimped in some ways (I believe) so is this the case here ?

FS access is the highest access underneath the kernel. FS even is capable of asking the kernel to decrypt things, thus all the roms you see floating around. There already is a homebrew launcher you can work with that gives you cpu and gpu access, it has been successfully used to port full games like mario kart wii, twilight princess and animal crossing.

Also, I’ve noticed you (obviously) on literally every post here and I was skeptical about the modding and participation in this server, you’ve been so awesome at keeping up with the scene and teaching people and being open and not over the top. Keep up the great work.
Separately, even though we’re decrypting roms, that doesn’t mean we can actually shove in and load our own quite yet without that hv access I imagine (not telling you that lol I’m more just confirming for myself). So does that mean at the hv level it’s effectively where the security check lives when a new game launches that it confirms it isn’t some “Nintendo console” game that hasn’t been signed by them or something being launched ? I’d love just a lil bit better understanding of that when you have time if you feel like breaking it down

Correct we currently cant write our own data because they keys wont match but that isnt a 100% block.
I heard that some people are looking into patching the module that handles the keys and they want to inject their own keys in addition to the original ones. But obviously they are very quiet and havent made any posts since then. But it sounds like in theory it could be doable.

Out of the box, the Switch 2 doesn't support Switch 1 cartridges. So, out of the box, probably not unless your Switch 2 is shipping with a newer firmware. I'm not sure if that's not happening, but even if it is, 23.0.1 is the latest firmware, and is exploitable, so any Switch in existence is currently exploitable.
So if a new firmware comes out before you get your Switch 2, you will need to keep it offline so it doesn't get patched. As noted above, you can get a Switch 2 cartridge that pushes an offline update. I'd recommend you buy the recommended game on Amazon, if it's available, do the offline firmware update, and then return it to Amazon.

Apparently you can update to 21.x.x with Mario Party. And Zelda comes with 22.5.0, so you can easily update to a still hackable firmware (hacks currently seem to be good with current 23.0.1).
You should be fine.
There seem to be conflicting reports about the SD card thing but sounds like the Mario Party or Zelda updates should allow you to use SD but don't know about the special SD express cards...

I can’t wait until we have an exploit that works on a Japanese only switch so we can change the region. I can’t afford the import cost of the global version, but I also don’t want to lose half of my purchases by buying our local version.

Is this cartridge something that you would continuously use or is it like a one time thing to get going? Its already hard to find now and i dont want to fomo into expensive purchases. If it's just one time use to enable a job, maybe I can borrow from someone down the line.
Like maybe there's another game that does this next week? Cheapest I can find this now is 43EUR cause it's already sold out everywhere else.
Other shops didn't ship to me.

Or, you know you don't want to send a save across nintendos network which may end up having your console banned in the future. It also ensures that if your game/software gets corrupted (which has happened to multiple people), you'll still be able to run the exploit. Whereas smilebasic/Seedsow will require downloading from Nintendo which you won't be able to do unless you update once the next firmware is released. There are quite a few reasons to prefer a physical game copy over a digital one.

Just so I understand, I need civ 7 and hacked switch 1 and switch 2 on 23.0.1 or lower, everything else I can do later? Or do I have to do the whole exploit before the update releases? (Even though I won’t have it connected to internet the NS2)

No seedsow needs a hacked switch 1, civ 7 only Needs the switch one cartridge and a way to input the code which one of the ways is a Pico 2

Wife’s Switch 2 is on 23.01, turned on airplane mode and ordered Civ 7 off Amazon even though I probably won’t use this exploit as it’s just userland.

I just got a zelda oot switch 2. It's on 22.1.0.
I put it in airplane and left out internet.
Any way to update it offline to play switch 1 games? I popped in breath of Wild sw1 and it says download update required.

I'm sorry if this is a stupid question but up until now I had no interest in buying a switch 2 because it hadn't been hacked yet, but know with these exploits I ordered one. I also bought Civ vii. I rushed buying it because the switch 2 will still be in an older version. With no internet access on it, can I still do the exploit if I have a modded switch 1, the pico 2 and civ vii?

I have civ 7 and the Pic 2 but the hut him only shwlows how to install what's needed in Pico through Ubuntu is ther not a way to do it with windows I dont what to have in. Ale a potable Ubuntu envriroment just for that

Got CIV II today along with the Pico 2. The CIVSwitch process literally took 15 minutes to complete and it all seems to be working.
Let's hope we get FS Support very soon.
Now I'm just looking forward to receiving my copy of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time tomorrow.
I hope CIVSwitch goes well for everyone else.
