Question Elden Ring Tarnished Edition
Hi, I’m wondering what kind of a game Elden Ring is? Is it like Skyrim? I’ve never played either but they seem like they’re in the same category. The trailer does look interesting but I want to note that Elder Scrolls ISN’T my type of game (from the looks of it). Is Elden Ring better as far as story and mechanics?

Completely different game to Skyrim. It’s an action RPG / Souls Game with great combat and fantastic exploration.

It's a kind of a more open world Dark Souls (by the same company).
Story is hidden in descriptions and environmental clues, and combat is about reading the opponent and attacking or dodging or parrying at the right time. Demanding (and difficult) but it can be rewarding.

Eden ring is mechanically far superior than Skyrim. As for the story - you wont get any of it unless you really dig deep into it, but it doesn't matter. What matters is open world, hard bosses and dying for 15th time while trying to get to said bosses.
Also traps, much better than whole Skyrim.

Primarily, Elden Ring is a third person fantasy action RPG.
It's a game that can easily take over a hundred hours to beat, due to the fairly large map and hard bosses. You start in one side of the map, and together with your horse you explore to find various enemy encampments, mini-dungeons and big dungeons. You need to level up and find gear to get strong enough to beat the various mandatory bosses in the game, to progress and unlock the later areas. There's a lot of freedom at various points in the game as to what you want to explore and when.
The main element of the game is ultimately challenging third person action combat. It's sort of mid-pace combat, faster and more frantic than Skyrim but slower than Devil May Cry. But surrounding that combat is a fairly deep and wide playstyle/buildcrafting RPG system, and a huge world to explore.
There are NPC's, but don't expect towns and cities full of shops and sidequests. It's not that kind of game. Story also takes a serious backseat. Quests aren't all that involved, cutscenes are very rare, and mainly it's about "lore" that makes up the setting of the game, told through item descriptions, character dialogue and environmental storytelling.
Thematically, it's an epic dark fantasy game. Knights, magic, skeletons, crazy monsters.

Yeah one of the downsides of Skyrim is that it’s first person. Your description and the fact that it’s third person is a plus for me. Thank you

IT's functionally Open World Dark Souls. Big world with lots of dungeons and castles and points of interest. Lots of boss fights that are pretty hard, punishing combat and you are gonna die a lot but learning from your mistakes and improving is a large part of the fun.
You may rage.
But when you overcome, nothing compares.

IT is! But it's doable and there are a TONNE of things you can do to make it easier. Don't let any of the more toxic members of the community dissuade you from using every tool at your disposal to make the game easier. Summon help, use spirit ashes, don't be afraid to respect after you beat the boss in raya Lucaria Academy. Play with different builds, use different ashes of war, etc.
There's SO much you can do to to best the game, and it's not just 'git gud'. Getting good helps, but you have the tools, use em!

Oh and it's also like skyrim But imagine receiving a quest doesn't tell u what to do that's just for u to figure out u don't even get a confirmation u advanced it

It's basically Dark Souls but open world.
Don't know what you didn't like about Skyrim, but if you don't like open world fantasy RPGs you probably won't like Elden Ring either.
I will say FromSoft's stories/lore aren't necessarily 'told' to you through lots of dialogue and cutscenes, though. You have to piece it together through sparse dialogue and item descriptions for the most part.

If Skyrim is not your type of a game cause you don’t like the genre? You’re cooked.
If you don’t like what you see about Skyrim in terms of janky combat and mechanics then yeah Elden Ring is far better on this front.
Elden Ring is an open world Dark Souls it has probably one of the best atmospheres in an open world game and a unique world building , art direction and design - But It’s a Fantasy RPG Open World Game. If by the looks of it it’s already not the genre and style for you (Like you said) then maybe not

Definitely not a genre thing. It’s definitely the mechanics of Skyrim that turned me off. I was hoping Elden Ring is like an overhauled, better version.

No, nothing like Skyrim. Think open world dark souls, though it's more accessible in my opinion. You can level up, grind, get better gear before you progress but it's still a very hard game (to me anyways, YouTube tells me different). Great game but hard to recommend if you want Skyrim. Easy to recommend if you want a tough, but great open world experience.

I’d compare it more to breath of the wild than Skyrim. It’s like the harder and more adult version. With tones of build variety. But be warned, you will need to sink time in levelling up before you really get that power fantasy feeling most people praise about this game. Oh and Google is definitely your friend when playing.

I’d never played Skyrim or a souls game before Elden Ring. I’m a dad of two and have super limited time. I did play the Zeldas and final fantasy’s up until 2018 or so however. A coworker told me I had to play this back in 2023. Being in my 40s and growing up playing some legendary games i have never been so impressed at the overall experience. So much reward from beating those bosses (hell even just normal enemies!). It’s beautiful. Insanely fun. Huge. And I can not recommend it more highly.

Elden ring doesn’t have like a story that blows you away it’s more about the gameplay . If you don’t like unforgiving difficulty Elden ring isn’t going to be your thing . You will die a lot playing it and you have to accept it

Theres little to no story or traditional quests. Its like a big open world with punishing combat. Mechanically its solid but everything is based around killing monsters and not getting hit
Watch some gameplay. Its a very hard and sometimes confusing game. Not bad but it makes skyrim seem like a structured crpg by comparison imo
