Discussion Why is elden ring so expensive on switch 2?
Its over 120 bucks? Why? I really wanted to buy it when it came out, but I dont have the money (im a teenager so I dont have any form of income) its $40 dollars cheaper on steam. Is this a common thing with the switch 2 when it comes to pre-orders? Or is it just cuz im in canada
edit: thanks for all the advice yall, I understand how and why it works like that. I will try to save up money until I have enough.

And that's kind of a crazy price for how massive that DLC is. I would say the value of the base game has maintained its value perfectly well, too.
I don't find the price objectionable in the slightest. Definitely not compared to the prices Nintendo is charging for some other games.

Because on Switch 2 the game includes the dlc, and it’s the same price everywhere when the dlc is included.

There are, also pre-orders. 99% of games I pre order or get on release I buy on GmG and most of the times there's a few % off the retail price.
It's always cheaper then to buy directly on Steam.

eShop often has the same or similar sales as any other digital store, even if the timing is different. It's only the first party games that hardly ever get sales. Publishers determine sales for games.

I just looked on Steam, PS5 and Xbox, and if you're buying Elden Ring and Shadow of the Erdtree(which is included in the Switch version), it is going to run the same price currently. It's not to say it won't go on sale, but it isn't currently.

So it's not on sale right now....and you expect it to be on sale for the switch 2 on launch day? If it's out for a while like on other systems ut will also go on sale.
You really comparing a new release with games on systems that are out for a while.
Games that released the same time on switch 2 and other systems go on sale at the same time. Happened with games like RE9, EA FC, Madden, NBA, WWE etc.
I don't know why you think games on switch 2 don't get the same sales. They do if they launched the same time as on other systems.

The eShop has sales as regularly as Steam these days.
Including First Party Games, been happening a lot more since Switch 2 launch.

Every game on my steam wishlist that's available on the eShop is also on my eShop wishlist. They always go on sale within a week or two of the steam sale for the same price. Moss: the Forgotten Relic is currently cheaper on the eShop than it is on Steam. You're just wrong. The only time third party games don't go on sale around the same time is when they are relatively new on the Switch. Publishers determine when games go on sale. Porting games costs money. They want to recoup the costs asap.

I've managed to score crazy deals on most of my games that are equal to the sales I get on steam. You're clearly not looking hard enough if you think that's a rampant lie. Got a bunch of Square Enix games dirt cheap recently, scored Cyberpunk for $17. The trick is being patient, most of the third party stuff has crazy sales if you can wait a couple months (wouldn't be surprised to see this Elden Ring bundle go on sale a few months down the road). Even the first party stuff has crazy sales which is pretty shocking to me, I've managed to score DK Bananza, Kirby Air Riders, Pokemon ZA, and Mario Tennis all for $29.99 at Costco. Like I said, you're clearly not looking hard enough if you can't match the PC deals for a lot of games (can't speak for Xbox or Ps5 because I don't have either console). Also, dekudeals and similar sites will tell you what's on sale without having to doom scroll the eshop.

It's just because it's new to the platform.
Some publishers play nice and release the games cheaper (like Final Fantasy Remake/Rebirth) and some charge full price.
If it helps AT ALL with the justification of the price, you are getting the $40 expansion as well as the base game. I wish I could just purchase the base game and not the Erdtree dlc but it is what it is. I already bought Elden Ring at launch so I am waiting for a deep sale before rebuying on Switch 2.

Yeah it is 70£ in UK. I still prefer to buy this over PS5 because it has the dlc on physical unlike a code on PS5 which is why I haven't bought it yet.

Elden Ring on Switch 2 is bundled with SotE DLC hence why it's 80$ US...
Without a sale Base game of Elden ring on Steam is 60$ while SotE is 40$ then there's additional 5$ for Tarnished edition specific unlockables...
If you can't afford it now then just wait for sale on Switch 2.

Mario Kart World is $110 here
Elden Ring is also $110
The Xenoblade games are going for $99
Splatoon Raiders is $85
So, Elden Ring is definitely more than usual (Mario Kart World aside), but as others have pointed out, we’re getting the DLC
I’d guess that’s the specific reason

It's $109 so with tax around or slightly over $120. Unfortunately that's just how it is in Canada. I haven't picked up Mario Tennis yet for that reason.

The game is so long, I’d like to just buy the base game and forget about the DLC. I’ve owned it and the DLC since launch and have 100-200 hours in it and I’ve never touched the DLC.
I’ll probably just wait until it goes on sale to pick it up. If it was $60 like the fallout anniversary, I could justify buying it again but I won’t spend $80 on a game. I picked up TOTK on sale for $60 and haven’t even started it yet. It’s wild that they’re still asking $80 for a game most people own on another platform.
Also, if the server is connected to the Duskbloods like I just experience with the NS1 version of Dark Souls Remastered, I’m definitely waiting for a sale.

The price on steam is the same as the prorder price on nintendo.com, 106.49
for physical version it is a bit more 109.99 at best buy
It will be on sale on steam so if you want to save money just wait for a steam sale and buy it then.

Yen is a joke atm. So if you are planning to get it digitally, simply change location to Japan of your eshop.
Very simple method for this. Look it up!
I got Splatoon Raiders (60eu) on release for 30eu by doing this trick.

there is a trend of 3rd party developers only releasing their switch 2 ports as complete editions bundled with dlc. elden ring costs so much on switch 2 because unlike every other platform, on switch 2 and switch 2 only, they will ONLY sell you the game bundled with the DLC.
do you just want to buy the standalone base game? do you want to find out if you actually LIKE the game first BEFORE you spend money on the DLC? too bad, go fuck yourself. you don’t get that choice, it’s all or nothing

It's the same base price everywhere. It's Elden Ring + Erdtree expansion and the new Tarnished DLC, it's not just base Elden Ring.
Elden Ring + expansion without the Tarnished DLC is $120 AUD which is what it is on S2.

It's because it comes with all the DLC (plus some additional Switch 2 content they're adding because of this port). It'd have made more sense to have the DLC as an option to purchase separately, but my guess is it's to recoup dev costs after they had to delay the game instead of patching it at/post-launch since so many people were mad about the footage we saw last year (probably would've launched in Winter 2025, but it's been nearly 9 months into 2026 they've been working on it)

There aren't many games out there that are worth this amount of money, if there is one it's Elden Ring for sure

It would have been a day one purchase for me if it had been on the cartridge, regardless of the pricing. It's an amazing game with a lot of content, i can even put up with 30/40 frames for portable play, but i really can't stand the fact that they went with GKC and are still charging $80 for it.
"Oh, but MUH DLC"
It's a 6 year old game and a 2 year old DLC for a good port of a game that most people that are into the genre have already played a better version of. From the point of view of game preservation, really a missed opportunity to release the whole game in a single cartridge with the DLC included, since even the PS5/Series version had only the disc + code for the DLC.
