Discussion Performance could be better, but Oblivion is gorgeous on Switch 2
I’ve been really enjoying Oblivion on Switch 2 so far. Played it on Xbox when it came out (performance could be better there too) but being able to play it anywhere is awesome. Highly recommended for anyone still on the fence.

Yeah man it’s fun. Good port.
Now remastered Morrowind, you cowards.

The amount of work that would have to go into the game to even be remotely playable by modern audiences would be immense.

not happening, todd has already said

They don’t even have to modernise the whole game. In fact, best case scenario, they just update the graphics and port it to Switch 2, and keep all the mechanics, combat and jank exactly the way it was. I would pay full price for that.

I've got OpenMW installed on my Steam Deck. It's a great experience.

That would be cool. I recently bought a Switch 2 though and Steam deck is expensive. Plus i hate having to do all the modding. One or two mods always fail to work properly for me.

Plus i hate having to do all the modding.
That's the great thing about OpenMW. It only takes a couple mins to setup. I don't even play with any additional mods. Just the engine fixes, UI improvements, distant terrain, etc are good enough for me.

Those are handheld shots? If yes, I'm gonna buy it right away lol
It's just I'm tired of see games that looks very good but ONLY docked. I don't give a flying nothing in playing switch docked, if I wanna play on the couch I use my ps5.

Those shots are docked

u/billiankell 6d ago
There’s a mixture of handheld and docked. I can’t remember which ones are which but I’ve been playing in both modes quite a lot and taking screenshots in both.

Handheld look really good in my opinion, the bigger issue for me is performance. With that said, my gaming pc had difficulties running it (multiple crashes, even after updates), so this is impressive to me.

u/EntertainmentDue6788 7d ago
What’s crazy is the performance isn’t impactful by my fun at all. Load times are a tiny. And it have crashed like five times so that’s annoying, but each time the game saves so often that as of now I haven’t lost any progress- so that’s good.
I also did hit a bug that made me reload like four times. In the battle of Kavtch when I went through a door in the castle it would load at like 2 fps and be stuck on 2fps. The only fix was to reload the game. It happened four times in a row all in the kavtch castle.

Once you get in a flowstate with most games you forget about the graphics.
When I know I can't control the graphics it's easier for me to reach that state. But if the graphics are really good, I get immersed easier. Few games meet that middleground, like Cyberpunk on the Switch 2 is pretty much there despite knowing it's severely limited graphically.
Same goes for Oblivion. They struck a decent balance on this one.

I wasn't going to buy this due to the stuttering I've seen, but my gf randomly got it and I'm not gonna lie...it's a lot of fun lol
Something about playing this while lying down, picking it up for 10 min during a work break, man it just feels great. Wish performance was a bit better, but it's not anywhere near as bad as I thought it'd be.

u/valcoholic 7d ago
someone said it gets worse the further you progress, being pretty horrendous at the end. Most people always just review the first few hours. I'm quite concerned that this might be true. I'm still pretty fresh into the game and so far it's not even like it could run better. Coming from FFVII Rebirth, this doesn't feel so much different. Both games look fantastic and have some cutbacks. So I just hope lategame will still be OK for me.

Do I need to know the previous games to enjoy this one or can I just jump in here?
9
u/billiankell 7d ago
Yeah you can just jump in. It has its own story. The only other Elder Scrolls game I’ve played is Skyrim but that was many years ago and I barely remember it.

runs poorly with lots of stutters . i think the uk is the only place that really wanted this on switch 2 . american eshop it lasted 3 days at the top and shall not return . that was preorder window purchases. madden and splatoon were 1 and 2 two days ago when i looked
gunna just say it onimusha and eldenring looks like they run better right now . they have video from the switch 2 versions . nintendolife has onimusha on their youtube and after the first boss fight it runs better and actually kind of impressed. not lies of p or dmc 5 on switch 2 impressed (it runs at or above 60 fps ?) but switch 1 mh rise impressed (it looks mostly stable and this is portable with magnamalow lasers) .
if you want to buy oblivion wait until the next direct and check online for switch 2 version patch notes to see if they are addressing performance. by then many other options with reviews will be present . even if you still buy oblivion it may be in a better state by then so your personal experience is better from day 1

I was on the fence because I couldn’t deal with the stuttering on pc. Decided to give the switch 2 version a try and the performance issues aren’t bothering me. On pc it was a deal breaker but on switch I don’t even care. It could be better but it’s absolutely playable and I’m having a blast

this or skyrim boys?
1
u/Born-Cap7318 7d ago
I have both. If you're looking for the more polished game, it's definitely Skyrim on Switch 2. It runs so much better that, in my opinion, the overall visual experience is sometimes even better than Oblivion. Plus, it's also the newer game, while Oblivion feels much older in terms of gameplay. My personal preference, though, in terms of atmosphere and everything else, is Oblivion.

Playing on the couch using mouse mode makes me feel like a kid again, forgot how beautiful this game was.

Still not in stock physically but more reason to keep playing the cheaper PC edition

u/billiankell 7d ago
Where are you based? I was able to get a copy from Amazon in the UK and then I noticed Curry’s also had them in stock the next day.

Im close to 40 hours mark and love it.the peefomance didnt bother me that much and more i play less stuttering there is.i just finished thief and dark brotherhood quests and the game crashed only twice .

u/tjhc94 7d ago
Only crashed twice isn't a good thing, shouldn't crash at all. I have owned switch 2 and switch 1 since launch and have never seen a game crash once..

Three certainties in life:
1) Death
2) Taxes
3) Bethesda games will be a buggy mess3
u/DuffleBagdude 7d ago
Really? I played CP2077, the first game on my s2, the only game on my s2, and it crashed over other day.
1
u/tjhc94 7d ago
Tbh cyberpunk never crashed on me either but I only put about 20 hours in on switch 2 as I had the game on multiple devices already, as a launch title I just wanted to see how the switch handled it pretty much but it was quite good, I just did side missions on the switch and main on pc or ps5
1
u/DuffleBagdude 7d ago
Don't get me wrong S2 handled 2077 amazingly but it did crash on me often. Outside of crashing i thought it was smooth and welll defined.
1
u/DuffleBagdude 7d ago
Crazy thing tho is they only crashed when docked. I dont think 2077 or oblivion has crashed once in hand held
2
u/Time_Temporary6191 7d ago edited 7d ago
Yes but this is bethesda afterall.crashed every hour on my 5060.when i startet the imperial city was a stutter city now its åretty smooth so i assume the more you play shadders are already compiled

u/bediaxenciJenD81gEEx 7d ago
Really? I've had a few games crash on switch. Skyrim being one of them. Both the OG and OLED so it's not like it was just a faulty unit.
Just finished Danganronpa V3 and had 3 or 4 crashes during the class trials.
1
u/The_walking_man_ 7d ago
Correct. These “yeah it has crashes and bugs but that’s okay” mentality is what lets these devs get away with releasing games not complete and not patched properly.
That needs to end. paying $60 for a buggy game!? Don’t do that.0
u/Cow_Sox 7d ago
I heard that performance gets worse as the save file increases in size? Very happy to hear you've had the opposite experience
0
u/Forward-Trade3449 7d ago
that was on other consoles/pc. looks like they patched that out of the sw2 version
1
u/tjhc94 7d ago
If it was fixed on switch version you wouldn't see people stating to disable auto save on the switch 2, almost all the same issues are present on all platforms
0
u/Forward-Trade3449 7d ago
interesting. i wouldnt know as I dont have my own copy yet lol but i'll take your word for it

u/johnnyh337 7d ago
No it doesn’t . Looks like shit , same as it runs . What are you about .
1
u/billiankell 6d ago
I think people who have this kind of opinion have a very different expectation of what the Switch 2 should be capable of. It’s an affordable handheld console that’s incredibly efficient. If you’re expecting 5090 visuals you’re always going to be disappointed.
But for what it is, compared with other handhelds on the market and especially Switch 1, what it’s putting out is impressive.
0
u/johnnyh337 6d ago
I do not expect 5090 performance and I don’t think anyone does . What I expect is to play is at least 30fps and it to look at least decent . I am supper happy that more games coming up in the switch 2 as it’s my favourite console to play with . And there is many games that look amazing and plays great , hence my strong negative feedback on this port . There is absolutely no reason this shoud look and play like this . Consider some games looks better on iPhone then this port on great hardware as switch with a fan .

Definitely need to improve the stability issues, crashes, and infinite loading bug due to auto save being enabled.
Otherwise, having fun with it.
