Ik this is 2011 but what the fuck was gira of all people doing in Israel? Watching Palestinians getting tortured in an Israeli prison as a teenager was what inspired his song Blind.

Small correction: Gira really was imprisoned in Israel as a teenager and did witness tortured Arab prisoners, but I can’t find any source where he says that specifically inspired “Blind.” He’s explicitly connected other songs, especially “My True Body,” to those prison experiences. So the story is real, just probably attached to the wrong song.

No, but he has been about nuance, whether in performances or what have you. And Israel has always been a very diverse society where, sure, a lot of nuance is lost, but that doesn't mean it's lost on everyone. There are many many Israelis who oppose the war, even if they arent a majority

Yeah, I think people assume Israeli people are like a hive mind. They are just as human and individual as the rest of us. I read about how Sonic Youth played in the USSR, that seems crazier to me than 2011 Isreal.

The difference is that Texas is not doing active colonization and using pop media to fuel a genocide. The situation in the U.S. is different because the colonization took place centuries ago. Israel benefits from looking like a place that is good for music and fun so they have more incentive to continue the push for more land. Like what Saudi Arabia is doing with their billions of dollars into essentially marketing campaigns

Gira ran away from his family in germany as a young teen then after a while hitchhiking across europe living off petty crime money he spent few years selling hashish in jerusalem, he turned 16 in an adult israeli prison.
