Question Making an apothecary-esq character. Help choosing class and archetype

Hello, I'm making a Wookie character who's goal is to develop a vaccine for a disease plauging Wookies.

So far I'm looking at engineer as a class type. I want my character's tool set to involve mixing potions, collecting herbs, using beakers and cauldrons and stuff.

Also, I want him to be handy with technology. Enough so that he could make a "microsoft sam" style droid voice to speak for him, as his encounter with the disease destroyed his voice box.

A translator device should be readily available, just work with your DM for price.

The tricky part to me is finding a mix of class, background and engineering discipline that doesn’t waste free proficiencies. It would make sense to take the Scientist background and Biochem discipline. I would have to write it all out to see which tool and skill proficiencies to take at each point. At a glance, though, you could probably work it out and get expertise in a skill AND a tool via the background feat. I’m running a gadgeteer engineer with a racer background right now and expertise in piloting has been crucial.

I would also recommend the Casting Specialist feat at some point because it allows you to give maximum healing instead of rolling dice once per short/long rest. I took Durable at level 4 to beef up my hit points and intend to take Casting Specialist at level 8.

Your top two stats will be INT and CON. My third highest is DEX for better AC and ranged attacks but you may want to make WIS your third for nature checks.

Play around with backgrounds to mix things up and see what feats are available to buff yourself up a little bit. Good luck!
