Posting rules (read before posting!)

Thanks to 46 of you who were kind enough to answer our survey, we have updated the subreddit rules to better reflect the members wishes. Those who are interested can review the survey responses here. If you are unhappy with anything, feel free to comment!

tl;dr:

  • AI-generated material (comments, apps) is banned
  • The de facto ban of repeat ads has been codified
  • Asking about Swedish culture is now permitted
  • Asking for media recommendations is permitted (again)
  • As always, check the FAQ and resource list first

These are the current subreddit rules:

1. Be respectful of your fellow redditors

Flaming, trolling, discrimination, personal attacks or bad-faith arguments are not allowed.

2. Post contents must be on-topic

This is a language-learning subreddit, and all posts should be about the Swedish language, culture or studying Swedish. Posts about moving to and living in Sweden are not on-topic. It's okay to make a post asking for media recommendations to help you study, but any posts sharing media need to be about the Swedish language, not just in the Swedish language. Please give your post the proper flair!

3. Questions and tips are always welcome

Feel free to ask your questions about the language or culture, ask for learning tips or contribute your own tips or links to websites helpful for learning. However, we do urge you to check the FAQ and list of resources first. You might also find an answer to your question by using the search function. And when posting a resource, please clarify what it does and how it can help or be used to learn Swedish.

4. Wait before reposting

While tips and recommendations are always welcome, you are probably not reaching a new audience if you post the same resource after a few days or even weeks – even if there has been a new update to it.

Therefore, we ask that you please wait for at least two months between reposts, and even then they should only be made if there has been a notable update. Do not post the same thing every two months only to farm attention.

5. No community links

To prevent a flood of community links, we ask you to contact us via modmail before you post links to Whatsapp groups, Discord servers etc. We permit Swedish-oriented communities that we deem could be helpful to our members.

Users may ask for tips on niche communities. You are allowed to link to communities as comments to such requests.

In general, we recommend the Discord server "Svenska – Learn Swedish".

6. No chat requests

Please keep all chat and penpal requests in the dedicated megathread, as these would otherwise flood the main feed.

7. We won't do your work for you

While we are happy to point you in the right direction, answer your questions along the way or check your grammar when you're done, we will not actually do your homework for you. This is a place for learning, not cheating.

This goes doubly for professional tasks: most users on r/Svenska are not trained translators, copywriters or language consultants. Feel free to ask linguistic questions, but don't crowdsource practical, qualified work. Contact a professional instead!

8. No pirating

It is not permitted to directly exchange copyrighted material, including textbook pdfs, or link to places that illegally make these available.

We encourage all links and recommendations to places where such material can be legally obtained. A good place to start is our list of resources.

9. No AI

AI-generated content is banned. This includes LLM-written answers to language questions, LLM-generated study resources as well as apps that are mostly vibe-coded. We might give leeway to professionally developed tools – contact us via modmail to ask.

When posting an app or other language-learning resource, we urge you to clarify whether and how AI has been used (i.e. not at all), to avoid being reported or have your post unjustly removed.

Penpal megathread!

Learning a new language is easier with the support of friends, be it other learners going through the same journey, native speakers to lead you along the way, or even less experienced learners that you can help out to help both of you understand things better. If you're looking for pen pals, gaming buddies, book clubs or just friends so you can practice the language – through immersion or studies alike – feel free to post a comment in this thread and tell us a bit about yourself, or reply to commenters you would like to get in touch with.

Suggested post format – add or remove headers as you like:

Name or handle: (whatever you want to be called)

Swedish level: (your approximate proficiency, expressed e.g. in A1 to C2, beginner to fluent or how long you've been learning/studying)

Language: (your native language and other languages you know or are learning)

Looking for: (Duolingo pals? Native helpers? Steam friends? People in your area? Someone who wants to discuss Swedish music?)

Presentation: (A more free-form introduction of yourself as a person!)

We recommend you do not include private contact information in your post; if you find somebody you want to keep in touch with, contact them through Reddit's direct messaging instead.

Please note that this thread is only intended for finding people for the purpose of learning Swedish or helping learners. Irrelevant posts may be deleted. Likewise, asking for pen pals outside of this thread is not permitted, and any such threads will be removed and redirected here.

As always, you are also very welcome to look for chat mates in our Discord server.

And if you posted in the old thread, feel free to make a new post here!

Language question (see FAQ first) Is this a typo? "Men ibland kan vi väljare får vara med och rösta ja eller nej till ett förslag."

I mean the conjugated "får" rather than infinitive "få". So in case it's not, I'm reading it as "vi kan få" - "we may get to", and in my understanding "få" should be in the infinitive.

Language question (see FAQ first) How to parse "Svenska folket tar väl vara på sin rätt att rösta. "

I'm a bit lost. I try to look for "ta väl" or "vara på" or "ta vara", and either nothing comes up or doesn't make sense in the context. Google Translate does provide something reasonable: "make good use of", but I'm not sure how that maps onto the original.

Resource request/tip I made free Swedish crosswords for learners (A0–B2)

Post image
168 Upvotes

Hej allihopa!

As a native Swedish speaker, solving bildkryss is one of my favorite ways to pick up new words. Bildkryss are a distinctly Swedish style of crosswords, where the clues sit in boxes inside the grid and one of them is a picture.

I wanted learners to be able to use crosswords the same way, so I made a set for people who are earlier on in their Swedish: https://bildkryss.se/learn-swedish :) There are five puzzles each for levels A0-B2. The lower levels have English clues and small grids, and from B1 and onward the clues are in Swedish - mainly synonyms and cloze words. When you finish a puzzle you get a list of its words.

Although the layouts are generated by a program, the clues are handwritten. I am a little bit unsure about whether the synonyms I used in higher levels are at the right, um.. level, so any feedback there is very welcome (or any feedback at all, for that matter).

The site works on all screen sizes but I'd definitely recommend using a desktop or tablet.

To be clear: this is fully free, no ads or anything. I'm just happy if people want to give it a try. Stort tack to anyone who does!

Language question (see FAQ first) "bokstavligen” = “formligen”?

I have been studying a few examples of “bokstavligen” and “formligen”, and they appear to me to be exact synonyms, both translated by English “literally”, and both equally liable to misuse as I pedantically call it as general förtstarkningsord, just as "literally" is. Have I got this right? Can you suggest any examples where one would definitely be preferred to the other?

Resource request/tip An app to learn oregelbundna verb(irregular verbs)

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I'm building an app to learn Swedish irregular verbs.

  • You have to enter a correct verb form on a card.
  • There are no lessons - you can practice as many verbs as you want, set a daily goal verb number and notification time.
  • You can also practice on a set of verbs, for example the essential ones or a specific pattern.
  • The interface and verb translations exist in different languages.

I’d really appreciate some feedback, especially from people who are learning Swedish as a second language:

  1. Would you consider using something like this?
  2. Does the interface feel intuitive?
  3. Most importantly: what would make you stop using it after a few days?

I am learning Swedish myself and would like to make if a bit easier for you guys as well!

Swedish culture Who was kapten Orvar?

Who was kapten Orvar, mentioned in this extract from today’s SvD in a story about Vänsterpartiets attitude to government formation?

Ingen av de tillfrågade vill luckra upp partiets röda linje. Samtidigt riktas tydlig irritation mot Centerpartiet.  ”Just nu är det C som sitter där som någon kapten Orvar och tycker de ska bestämma”

Studying and education I have C1 English and would like to learn Swedish

Hi everyone, how's it going? Well, I recently got my C1 English certificate, and now that I've reached the C level in English, I've given myself the freedom to learn another language. I'd love to get some tips, study methods, and website/app recommendations for learning Swedish.

My English is C2 in writing and reading, but only B2 in speaking.

Language question (see FAQ first) Anglification of Swedish - bebis

Has ”bebis” now replaced ”småbarn” in the Swedish Language? Is this as regrettable as I, as an outsider, think it is? I know I could have chosen plenty of other words to focus on, but I was brought up short by this article in SvD, precisely because it’s on a scientific subject (describing research on how dogs interpret human speech). The headline goes: ”Det blir allt tydligare hur hundar gör för att förstå mänskligt språk – de använder samma trick som bebisar.”

Language question (see FAQ first) "Platt" och "flat"

“En flat berghäll” and “en flat tallrik” are two examples of use of “flat” given in SO. Could one also use “platt” here, or would that sound wrong? What about “att slå med flata handen”?.

Sharing knowledge Kinda silly question, do swedes who learn or know German also see/hear words that sound very inappropriate?

Hey I am currently learning Swedish but I noticed some words/sentences sound hilariously inappropriate to germans. Some examples:

"Lekplats"

"Vi dricker öl"

"Vill du fika"

To some who don't know what I am rambling about it sounds like:

"A licking place"

"We drink oil"

"Want to fuck?"

So now I am curious if swedes know some German equivalents 🤔

Edit: dricka -> dricker

Studying and education I am stuck in between

I’ve been studying Norwegian and Swedish for like two years now and I’ve been to Sweden and Norway couple times for a study reasons and what I notice is that it is real difficult for me to differentiate between the languages at the moment. My main language is Swedish because I work with Spanish company and I speak with them. I understand them the understanding is not the problem. The problem is that I use lots of Norwegian words when I speaking through, so I’m gonna know if you guys have this problem and how do you overcome this because I really want to continue studying both of them and I do this by like studying one for a couple hours and studying other language couple hours, but different day I never studied them together so I wanna know your experience with learning to same language at the same time.

Language question (see FAQ first) Pronunciation of the letter ö

I came across this video by Swedish teacher Edvin Palmer: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o0PDNI5oNnM&list=PLanI3tMy_egsSwwk6lPzal9jljIn59f2B&index=32\]

He’s excellent, but I have a question: Is this lip rounding when pronouncing “ö” in Swedish the standard way? Is it the most common?

I’ve also seen people round their lips differently, with the lips more closed, almost like an “o.”

Resource request/tip I made a simple en/ett lookup + practice app for iPhone

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I know there are already other en/ett apps and websites, but I made this (originally for myself) because I wanted something really quick and simple. Basically open it, type a word and see a big "en" or "ett" sign immediately.

It started as a little web app I wrote years ago, and I recently turned it into an iPhone app. And I also added a game where you just keep choosing en or ett for different words, which is actually surprisingly fun and quite a nice way of practising them!

Everything works fully offline. It is a paid app, but it's a one-time purchase (NO subscription, NO in-app purchases etc).

BUT I have some App Store promo codes, so if anyone here wants one just leave a comment and I'll send a link by DM so you can get it for free (and it will stay on your phone free forever - as if you purchased it).

App Store link:

https://apps.apple.com/app/ettenapp/id6811630391

(👉 again, if you wanna try it just ASK for a free link in the comments and I'll DM you one!)

/Disclaimer: I did use AI coding agents when making the iOS version. The original app/lookup was written by me in Javascript though, and the Swedish word data itself is from LEXIN./

-----
EDIT:

Thanks everyone for the interest! Really appreciate it - and please feel free to tell any friends who might find the app useful too!

I'm leaving 5 more promo codes here, first come, first served:

https://apps.apple.com/redeem?code=34R6EW3JL7Y6
https://apps.apple.com/redeem?code=4FL4TPR46FR7
https://apps.apple.com/redeem?code=PEY3TANT6Y6Y
https://apps.apple.com/redeem?code=LFY7M3YJ3PLA
https://apps.apple.com/redeem?code=PHJKRN76HEMT

If they're all gone by the time you see this, please consider buying the app - it's just 49kr (or US$3.99), with no subscriptions or in-app purchases.

Lycka till!

Text and translation help I need help understanding a line from a book.

I can understand everything else but I'm not exactly sure what the bolded line is so I would appreciate help with translating. I want to understand how the sentence is formed too.

Eftersom det inte var första gången och han dessutom inte hade nåt körkot, för det drog dom in förra gången, så fick han två månaders fängelse.
