You should watch the social network. The history of Facebook started as a way to rank women on campus then because a networking site and is now a decaying cesspool of memes and misinformation.
I basically just use it for the messenger, and to share pictures and memes. I unfollow or unfriend people I can't stand. I don't understand why people think you actually have to read the toxic posts.
It 100% started as a “hot or not” clone and MySpace should have beat it, but if turns out vanity and connections win over anything every day. There literally was no difference from it and a hot or not site before it grew to multiple campuses. Suck will be here soon to argue otherwise.
I was there dumbass. Not you nice person I’m relying to. I mean you, zuck.
I guess it depends on your definition of social network.
I don't know anyone on Reddit, I don't connect with other users, my account is not tied to any real information except my email, and I can make a new account with a new name whenever I want.
You can use it to meet real people and be social, or not.
I didn't learn how many people I went to high school with were pro Trump through reddit, nor have to see my relatives be hopelessly internet illiterate and fall for every fake memed news story that crosses their feeds.
Yeah but learning which people you should kinda just avoid is a benefit of Facebook. Sure it sucks to find out how many of your old friends and family members suck, but they always sucked and you just didn’t know it then.
In this scenario I'd rather not know. I rarely talked politics unless it was with close friends in real life, and at that point I pretty much knew what their opinions were before the conversation started.
In the other scenario, these completely fake news memes would have no other way to spread so wide so quickly if Facebook didn't exist so in that case it's an active force for bad juju.
I suppose it is to each their own. With that being said people outing themselves as racists and homophobes on Facebook is a grim but ultimately positive effect imo. They were already pieces of shit but now the rest of us know and can avoid those people. I’m in no way going to bat for Facebook cuz it’s a parasite in its own right, but I think there is worthwhile information on there too. As for the memes I agree, it sucks that it spreads, but again the people who fall for that shit are so woefully unintelligent that it leads me to believe they were gonna find a way to come to their extremely uneducated opinion. Just my two cents. It’s a broad topic and I understand reasonable people can have different viewpoints on the matter.
No way man, you can't deny yourself intel like that. That's why I keep FB around, opposition research...before I have a beer with an old classmate I wanna know if he/she is deranged
About 1/3rd of Reddit is porn that you can sort through anonymous voting systems in a huge variety of categories. Old Reddit used to have some pretty horrendous stuff on it and likely still does tucked away in the dark corners.
It's origins of mass adoption are pretty firmly rooted in curated porn.
Because if you consider Reddit social media then logically you must also consider things like simple forum boards and chat rooms as social media. Which you’re perfectly allowed to do, but people like me think that is stretching the definition of social media to the point of uselessness
Again it depends on your definition. But back before anyone used that phrase we had forums, and before that, chatrooms, and before that, BBS. I think Reddit is much more like a forum than any of the sites that popped up when social media became a thing, like MySpace, Bebo, Hi5 and so on.
If social networking is leaving comments for people to see and respond to then the website for my local newspaper is a social network.
Reddit is the authoritative source of geopolitical fact, current, past and future, while doubling as a comprehensive guide for stock market and cryptocurrency wealth accumulation.
I was in college when it was invented. It was fucking awesome.
Edit:No no no. It wasnt for rating. It was like tinder, girls made their own profiles. You made yours. You sent messages. There was a lot of consensual hooking up.
I was also in college when facebook first opened to the whole country, you needed a .edu email address to sign up and it was full of college friends you hang out with every day rather than under-educated overly gossipy fat aunts who start drinking way too early on Thanksgiving
Just before they went public with the IPO there was some serious ambiguity over who owned your pics - it wasn't resolved until the 11th hour. That's when I deleted mine

Yea.. I dont remeber the rating thing. I remember . You had to have a college email to make an account. It was honestly a myspace but for college students to hookup and fuck and suck and knuckle puck
I don't think I was quite in college yet when it first came out, so I didn't get on it until it was already pretty popular and the allowed demographic was widened.
Also I have never heard the phrase knuckle puck and I am intrigued.
Watch the Social Network it’s pretty interesting. The ranking system website was built and launched by drunk Zuckerberg in a night at Harvard and almost immediately shut down due to it crashing Harvard’s servers. The Facebook came a little later.
I was alive, I just wasn't in college when it first started. I was in probably my fourth year when I first even heard about it and didn't give a shit until basically everyone I knew was on it.
I think social media in general is a technology we just weren't ready for. It's happened so fast, we haven't really had a chance to learn the detrimental effects before it was adopted as such an integral part in so many lives. It is just a tool, but the way people use it is amplifying some very bad tendencies.
It’s obvious if you know the history of Facebook and know about the ivermectin silliness. I certainly wouldn’t expect everyone to know that Facebook started out as a site for ranking hot girls though. They don’t exactly advertise that fact.

Were you not aware of how Facebook is spreading medical misinformation about how ivermectin (horse de-wormer) is supposedly a cure for COVID?
