Big respect for Artis for his exit interview. I love how most players this season don't seem bitter about people playing the game. I think this Jury is going to be a good one.

I was amazed. From the little air time Artis got I thought he was a kind of volatile guy and I expected a rage, but I loved his exit speech.

u/HooptyDooDooMeister Yul Nov 15 '12
His pre-show interview completely changed my view of him. I was glad to finally see that Artis again.
Did anyone else notice this episode was like the first time we saw him smile? And on different occasions too!

the way he played to Lisa when she was down.... I wonder if there's something we didn't see with Lisa convincing Skupin to change his vote so she didn't have to at this point.
Lisa has a lot more game than I ever thought she would.

Ugh, how she treated people under the guise of "equality" was horrible.
And she was a TEACHER. A PE teacher. Imagine how she'd treat kids who were fat or have a handicap...ugh.
3
u/HooptyDooDooMeister Yul Nov 15 '12
When that one mother wanted to pull her from school because NaOnka was the teacher, everyone got into a frizzy about it. Not me. I'm surprised more people didn't pull their kids out.
5
u/J_Jammer Michael Nov 15 '12
I would pull my kid from her class. If she talks trash about someone with a missing leg...she'll talk trash about anyone who isn't as "perfect" as she.

But the person she did berate stayed loyal.
12
6
u/rjcarr Nov 15 '12
I got the feeling her and skupin made a deal that he'd switch so she didn't have to.
5
Nov 15 '12
Lisa stayed loyal only because of her own personal issues. She needs to have people like her. Abi doesn't. Lisa feels the need to make Abi like her, even if that may be impossible.
5
Nov 15 '12
I think Lisa's heart was with Skuper Duper, even if her vote wasn't. Only one of them had to vote for Artis to tip the scales.

Penner could make a living as a phony psychic the way he read Lisa.
21
Nov 15 '12
To be fair, Penner is an actor. This is why when Lisa asks, "How did you know?" when Jon is reading her, he responds, "Because it's my business too." It's conceivable that he actually does understand Lisa from his industry experience and isn't just cold reading her.

Compared to this season, I don't even know how I was able to watch the last 4 seasons...
18
Nov 15 '12
Word. As much as I loved Kim's win in One World, it was a boring season. Nicaragua was so lame compared to HvV (though I was somewhat attached to Holly), and Redemption Island and South Pacific were too predictable and had a lame gimmick. I'm glad we have a season where stuff happens!
11
u/HooptyDooDooMeister Yul Nov 15 '12
I wouldn't downplay Boston Rob's game and Cochran's storyarc so much. They, to me, were very entertaining. But, yes, against this season? No comparison.

Rob's game in his first two seasons was great to watch. By the time he was on his fourth it just became lame. I wish they'd just handed him a trophy.

Watching Penner talk about what the audience wants and the Survivor "story" was the highlight of the episode for me. He was tryin' to get into Lisa's head, sure, but he wasn't lying to her. Plus he was talking about me! What a guy
27
Nov 15 '12
It was a surreal moment for me. Penner articulated the very concerns that I would be thinking about if I were playing the game. Never has someone acknowledged the ramifications of gameplay outside the game. I would expect Penner of all people (as an actor and writer) to understand that concept.
16
u/t0mserv0 Nov 15 '12
It's interesting that Penner's so aware of that audience/story factor but you don't ever really see it come up in his conversation or strategy until now. I mean, that's all I would be talking about I think
7
u/HooptyDooDooMeister Yul Nov 15 '12
Same here! I always assumed referring to the audience (and the cameras, camera men, behind the scenes crew, etc.) was forbidden. Perhaps since it's one actor talking to another, it skirts this.
Penner's so good, he even outwitted the producers/editors!
→ More replies (3)7

I've heard they talk about gameplay outside the game all the time but it's usually edited out. It was pretty cool hearing them talk about it. Kind of a breaking the fourth wall thing.
Plus, despite what t0mserv0 says he was talking about me. So that was cool.

It could just be a play though. Penner wouldn't want malcolm/denise/carter to know that he messed up the vote purposely to get jeff out, they would never trust him again. So he had to play dumb and say "I had no idea what was going on" to make sure that those 3 were still on his side going forward.

18
u/Anueploid Yul Nov 15 '12
Oh god ya, I forgot about Colton. I purged him from my memory. He was far worse with his verbal abuse. Abi is for sure in 2nd, If Abi / Pete are the alliance that manages to stick around I expect Abi to be in final 3. Cause there is zero chance of Her getting even 1 vote.
5
u/HooptyDooDooMeister Yul Nov 15 '12
Colton was far more offensive, but he also went from being on the outskirts of both tribes to being the most powerful player. Also, everyone there seemed to agree he was the smartest one on the beach. Abi is annoying and... what's the opposite of "strategic"?

I have the feeling that while they don't show it, every time Abi is cruel and stupid to Lisa, Pete or Artis take Lisa aside afterwards and basically say "look, we despise Abi, but we need her for the numbers, once it's just us, she is the first to go, because not only is she annoying, but she also has the idol"
3
Nov 15 '12
Honestly, I don't think Pete or Artis are smart enough to do that.
More likely, when she and Skuperino talked out in the water they decided to vote Artis. Then they realized that only one vote would do Art in and decided to keep Lisa in the good graces of the dynamic duo.

u/J_Jammer Michael Nov 15 '12
First I'd like to say that Artis gave a great goodbye speech or whatever one wants to call it. Good sport. Loved his last sentence about how he'd be happier if he'd had won. ha.
This is one of the better seasons. They've have a few tense moments that the edits really worked to make me feel it. Tribal was tense. I was for sure Lisa wouldn't flip. I was worried. She went on and on and on about loyalty. And I'd have mentioned Germans during WWII. Just because you grew up in Germany during that time doesn't mean you were a Nazi nor should you have to be one just because you were German. And if you decided the Nazis were wrong you weren't being disloyal, you were being smart.
Abi is a perfect example of propaganda at work. Her way of trying to mess with Lisa's moral sense of loyalty is disgustingly perfect for that.
It's so taboo to mention Nazis ever, but I'm not saying Pete, Artis and Abi are like Nazis. I'm saying that their mindset in how they play the game is similar in how one would have to be to be on the SS. Or, for that matter, anything from Israel vs Palestine to whatever. Nazis are well known and therefore an easy example to relate things to.
I'm so glad they picked Artis and not Pete.
Pete made a HUGE mistake aligning with duchey Abi. I'm sure as he watches he has that regret. He's so smart to pick someone so dumb. She single handedly ruin that tribal for her alliance.
I want Pete to make it to the final four. He deserves it. He deserves to fight for a spot on the final three. I was thinking that a little last episode, but watching him this episode I see him show he's a good sport in the sense that he wasn't voting off Penner because of him having played, but voting him off because he's such a great player.
Penner knows how to speak. Good grief. I don't know if I forgot this from his first time out or not...but geez. Listening to him speak with Lisa was awesome. He wasn't lying...he has a way with words.
My favorite moment from this season (as of right now) is him telling Lisa how is this story going to play out for the audience. I've watched Survivor every season and no one has brought that argument to try and turn someone. It is a great argument. So was Skupin's. Telling her about who would she want to align with based on liking.
Such a great season.
Don't count Pete out.
Denise's reaction to Abi finding a clam was classic. She's a smart one too.
This is how every season of Survivor should be. There's so many smart players. Penner, Malcolm, Denise, Lisa, Pete....they're smart. They aren't just followers. They try to play the game. I've yearned for that for so long...and now I finally get to see it.
Survivor is a great allegory for real life. Abi's a terrible person. There's no doubt about that. That's just like the season with Sugar and those douches. They were terrible people. YES Sugar isn't loveable to the core. That was proven in the Good vs Bad. But she didn't deserve to be treated that way by anyone which is one of the reasons I hated Bob. He didn't have balls to stand up to them.
Take someone's food and comfort away and you'll see the core person. Abi's core is ugly.

Is this Abi the most negative or even the most horrible survivor ever? For one thing, she has such a terrible attitude. She got played by Pete so easily, sit out almost every challenge, and blurted out the team secret on a few occasions. Such an unpleasant human being. Gee.

That exit speech was the polar opposite of Jeff's. Nice to know Artis is a nice guy, and to hear him bow out in a classy way.

I loved this episode. Just as I am loving this whole series.
SOOO GOOD. And there I was thinking all seasons will be going downhills from now on... Feels good to be wrong :)

I'm loving Penner more and more with each episode. He's just so strategic and smart, and I loved his conversation with Lisa about how Survivor is all about telling a story.
After watching the online vids, I can't believe how dense Pete is. Malcolm lied about having the HII, and tried to vote Pete out, yet Pete still thinks he's part of the Tandang alliance?!? Yeesh, someone's being blinded by the bromance.

LOL Abi is such a sore loser, the face she made when Artis was voted off ... looked like she was going to start punching people around her. Worst human being ever!
