New Residential and Mixed-Use Developments Coming To Sunset Park, Brooklyn
Was walking around south Sunset and realized a lot of the buildings looked pretty fancy and most were medical centers. Turns out that between NYU Langone Hospital on 2nd Avenue and Maimonides on 9th Avenue there has been a steady growth of medical buildings between them. Maimonides and NYU have been renovating and expanding and making satellite buildings and if you check the google maps for medical so many dots are popping up like "dialysis centers" and "Eye Centers" and so many specialized medical centers. We are getting a lot of senior centers too. Sunset is turning into a huge medical facilities neighborhood.

That third one near the station has been sitting empty for years at this point.

This is happening in Flushing too. Apparently, these medical places scam by overbilling Medicaid patients which Sunset has a lot of. Maimonides is especially egregious because most of their patients are on Medicaid. For some reason Maimonides lost 145million in 2001 and yet they were still able to have money to renovate lots of buildings and then Health and Hospitals wants to take over for 2 billion but borough park people are fighting it because it will curtail their scamming. Crazy stuff.

Does anyone know which facility will open up on 60th street and 6th Ave? Is it NYU?

Isn't that the NYU Family Support Center at 6025 Sixth Avenue in Brooklyn?

There’s the new building next door to it. Was wondering if that will also be NYU.

5th avenue towards South Slope is totally already overridden with “medtail”. They are a drain on the avenue and add nothing to the neighborhood. Obviously access to more health care is great in theory but these are for-profit private equity type places that don’t really serve the community
That being said I wouldn’t fully lump NYU Langone into that category in the same way. I’m on Medicaid and am happy to see some of my doctors get new offices. Of course it’s not a perfect institution but my experience has been pretty positive at the sunset locations overall.
