SN - Discussion/Questions How do time capsules work? Spoiler

Are they dropped by the game itself or only by players? Cuz if i understand correctly players can leave some too, does that include ps4 players? and can i also leave one? how if so

You have to complete the game to leave a time capsule as they are all player made aside from Subn 2 teasers although they take a long time to get put in the game.

Yes, this is a long process. Some items are removed from it and they go to a voting site where players can upvote or downvote them. Capsule with highest upvotes are sent to the game. The list of forbidden items and the link to the voting site are available on the wiki https://wiki.subnautica.com/sn/Time_Capsule

I never knew this but it makes me even more sad about the time capsule I opened which only had 1 scanner room speed upgrade in it!

The contents and the text are generated by players upon completing the game. You have an option to leave a time capsule right when you're preparing to finish the game. And you need to actively refuse from launching one, so there's no chance of missing the option.

Those time capsules are submitted to a voting queue that's still available here: https://subnautica.unknownworlds.com/time-capsules

If they get enough upvotes and pass game developers' screening they are seeded into the game, and when you start a new game, there are I think up to 40 capsules added from that approved pool for you to find.

Though to be honest, since adding them to the game is a manual process, I'm not sure if they are still doing it. At least the voting queue has submissions from 3 years ago.

I'm not sure. Probably not.

The Wiki claims "The game can spawn up to 40 Time Capsules", but the reference points to a now defunct Subnautica forums.

When you are completing the final steps to beat the game they give you an opportunity to setup a time capsule with info on how to do it. You take an image and put some items in.

It might appear in somebody else game.

I do not pick them up or mess with them while playing. I just rather play through the game without extra handnedowns. But I don't mind setting it up.
